To be honest, if you're playing a game set in the real world then adverts are actually a nice touch. While it's a money making scheme to the publishers and developers, it's a little extra to make the game seem real. Adverts can be tastefully done, it's just that they rarely are. _________________

Yeah, what daz said. We're not talking about the EA symbol comming up, and then the Burger Kind, followed by the Coke, but rather billboards, and vending machines, and other stuff could blend with the enviorment, and in some cases even add to the game's atmosphere. Bioshock has a 1950's atmosphere from what I've seen, would having 1950's style adds for coke take away from the experience? For superbowl adds, which are about 30 seconds, cost 3 million bucks a slot to run (granted they are seen by 90 million people, but then again, they are only seen once). The average game sells how many copies? lets say it's 1 million. Profit from the sale would be 50 million dollars. Wiki (take it with a grain of salt) said the development costs of a game are 20 million, and that the average profit per unit is around 5-6 dolars. Imagine if coke pays 1 buck per unit sold to advertise. That knocks money off the price tag.
IT WILL ALSO NEGATE PIRATES, AS LESS MONEY WILL BE LOSS BY STEELING THE ACTUAL UNIT. _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
The problem is that we don't pay significantly less for it, Daz. It's the same damn price or even more expensive.
Battlefield Heroes? If EA do it and it works other companies will follow suit.
I genuinely have seen absolutely zero ads in any (none sports) game I've ever played anyway, excluding small banners in the UI for the developers upcoming releases or for content hosts when loading an online game which I don't think count any more than having Mplay.co.uk at the start of a server name. _________________ QUICK_EDIT
I recall seeing a sign that said: "Dell - Own one, pwn all" in Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. But, since you don't really have to go past the truck, I guess it doesn't count. _________________

The idea is you can pay significently less for the product.
How much companies would be willing to knock off is certainly open to debate though, alot of the £40 games aren't worth £40.
Pah. Nowadays you don't even "buy" software anymore, you just buy the right to use it. And be damn sure that the small print says somewhere that they can retract that right at any time, for any reason they can make up. _________________ QUICK_EDIT
You can buy red alert 3 from EA, it would probably cost you 30 million, but you could buy it ;0 _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
Also, I highly advice against calling Icy a 'troll', because he's completely the opposite of that...
Well, with the pots and pans comment he's just proven otherwise. Even the most highly respected people can still be a dolt sometimes, they are human too after all. QUICK_EDIT

Comments like he made are part of why we like him. He doesn't hesitate to call people like you out on your stupidity and force it back down your own throat. Your problem, however, is that you didn't feel anything as it went down, and you kept going. It is entertaining, though, to a point. Not that I support this sort of thing that often. _________________

"SHOCKING!" The only thing that gets me is the INSTALL limit, and how they use wordplay to convince people its okay. Maybe EA should grow a pair and realise that no matter how much DRM they put in, its going to be pirated. _________________ Comcast: Yo dawg we herd yo were downloading, so we put fail in yo modem so yo cant download while yo failin! The irony here is that an 'outsider' has some relevant information to share, an alpha dog in the community has the gall to shoot him down for fun and the rest of you act like sheep, calling the outsider stupid. All on the basis that you -think- I'm saying some kind of bullshit, which actually makes you stupid.
Further to that, you think that just because a whole bunch of sheep (and the dog to round them up) are 'laughing' at me, that I should feel some sort of shame. I'm sorry, but you know nothing of the situation I posted other than what I posted. Your ignorance causes me no shame on -my- part.
Finally, I happen to have grown up past highschool and are no longer affected by the peer-pressure you think you're applying on me.
I agree though, y'all are hilarious.

they do know that...
only logical explanation for putting such restriction would be (this already goes in conspiracy craps):
1. they want to force new standard of protection
or
2. they are putting RA3 as test subject to see how this new protection will reflect on users and see what to do next with their (crap) games
---
at the end they will lose money on PC coz of piracy
but will win on consoles and that could become target of their games in future
they already made games for consoles only
and made louzy ports to MAC and PC (not talking about RTS/C&C)
why do you think they dont give a crap for Kanes Wrath patches and SDK ?
coz consoles dont need that thing
AboveAndBeyond is right in what he is saying thay are testing it on RA3 and the game companies prefer to target consoles but at least EA are still making computer games (what anoyes me is where i live all of the shops are getting ride of computer games, theres only one shop that has any copyes of the first decade, no one has C&C but thay have KW and i had to crawl under a shelf to find get the second last and only 2 copies od generals)

Yeah, nothing is sold anywhere these days except the latest console games. Nowhere here sells second hand games either. Gamestation doesnt have PC games anymore IIRC. They do sell preowned Gamecubes but they dont sell the games for 'em.
All the shops in Middlesbrough have a healthy supply of second hand games, though the PC sections in them have been getting gradually smaller over the past two years.
Why anyone buys games in shops anymore is beyond me anyway, you can get them at least a fiver (if not more) cheaper online 99% of the time. _________________ QUICK_EDIT

Convenience and immediacy.
While it can be cheaper, there is a delay to its delivery. _________________ YR modder/artist, DOOM mapper, aka evanb90

OK. Let's take what you told us and extrapolate a likely conclusion:

I lost access to the C&C frontpage (IP ban) when they caught me acquiring The Sims. :p
From the looks of it, a seemingly normal statement, but the chances of EA specifically targeting you and issuing an IP ban on their C&C homepage are slim to none. Especially when you were not even downloading a C&C game. You'd think that way more people would be complaining about being banned because they were caught, but that's not the case, so you appear to be special. By special, I mean that at the same time you were downloading The Sims, one or more of your ISPs DNS servers went down. So trying to access "www.commandandconquer.com" turned up a nice time out page. You assumed "oh no, they caught me", because you're paranoid of large companies? (ref. tinfoil comment) Unless you can provide proof of your stated IP ban, it's impossible to believe you.
This is the likely scenario. Can you prove it wrong? _________________

Actually no, the part where Icy told me 'I know nothing' is fact because it has happenned to me and I know first hand.

I wouldn't have thought complaining for being banned from a site due to you 'pirating' their products would be all too popular, which I suppose does make me special. Not that I complained.

Actually what happenned was this:
Almost a week after finishing a download of disc 4 since my original has gotten some scratches on it and won't install, I was sent a notice of infrigement from my ISP which basically contains the information sent to them regarding my 'violation', plus some of their own legal talk. The details given to them tell exactly what torrent I was participating in and what time they logged my IP doing it. Of course, all my ISP could do was verify that I was indeed logged in under that IP at that time.
Next time I visit the C&C homepage I watched a replay through their web system and when I quit the game and tried looking for another replay, I am greeted with a single line of text:
'You do not have permission to view this [page/resource/forget the exact term used].'
This was not a page timeout/403 error. It would happen from then on when under my IP - I had tested proxies/anonymous browsing sites which could get in fine. This stayed with me until I changed ISPs.
It only applied to the C&C homepage - it did not affect logging in through the game (though I never played any games, just accessing the info screens ingame etc), did not affect westwood.com (the first decade homepage) or the forums.
I'm sure the events here are open to interpretation, but it certainly seems way too coincedental to me. QUICK_EDIT
The information looks reasonable enough. Though still skeptical, I guess it's possible. Still, extremely unheard of...the ban that is...people getting letters/notices is just uncommon. _________________
