Subject description: How did you get introduced to C&C modding?
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

I'm curious how all you got introduced to modding C&C.

I started out playing TS and YR for some years, and liked the C&C series. After a long while I found out about Tumsun. I lurked around there, learning modding, and messing around with TSTW, and later started messing with the other C&C games, especially YR. I saw as Tumsun relaunched to Tibweb, and I then came here to PPM, saw all this for Ra2/YR too, and now am aspiring for a mod eventually.

Hmm cant actually remember but my C&C life started out as Ra1 on the PS1. When I got Ra2 on the PC and later YR I somehow stumbled across Revora and started a mod; Apocalypse.

Heres the first lame topic I made about it: http://forums.revora.net/index.php?showtopic=16904&st=0&start=0

I never ever did weird stuff with weapons or anything though. :/ The ideas were pretty retarded however. One thing stuck with me forever though: I never see ideas through. Laughing

Pretty much, that was one of my first topics on TimSun. I got banned (I had 3 warnings), but people liked me.

I was a true noob to modding(asking where rules at!? check some of my oldest posts #Tongue ) when I first started. Asking things like "where rules at!?" check some of my oldest posts #Tongue . My first modifications were done without guidance(other than asking about the rules.) They were basically uberfying units to cheat on the campaign.

EDIT: I looked at my older posts and my eyes just melted...

God, your talking like, back in the early RA1 modding days, i used to make maps and visit websites using the school computers on how to mod them. Thats gotta be about 1998, because i remember hearing about Tiberian Sun in development.

After RA1 i moved onto TS once it come out and just followed along in the background downloading mods, etc. Was not until about 2003 that i got the internet at home and started visiting more and more modding websites. I lurked about TumSun for a while before i joined in early 2004, made a few posts concerning upgrades and nodes, and a few other logic related questions, kinda got a name for myself as "mr ask everything before trying". I then join here in about April 2005 and made my first post to do with non INI related modding, http://www.ppmsite.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6940. Ya'know, i sit a laugh at that now, but well, to all them people who used to moan at me, who's the guy reading all your except.txt's now! #Tongue

So yea, thats where it all started...

I was making survival maps for Yuri's Revenge, when I started to get interested in adding my own stuff. I went to raden, and got the inis. So in the beginning all of my mods were just rules changes. I had this predejuce against XCC because for some reason I thought that it was like coding (back then I though coding was using binary code Laughing ). But eventually I tired it out, and then my modding exploded. I was working on the typical "first mod", the end all beat all "add every side from every game mod". I got pretty far too. I worked on it for like three months too before I went here and announced it. Of course, I was shit on. But after that I kinda just...never finished anything I started.

When I was 10 I got RA2 from a friend. When I was 12 I got RA1. I had visited PPM as a guest many years ago, maybe 11 or something. Soon after, I had somehow lost interest in C&C since I had none of the discs (lost or broken or such).

But you know, you just can't quit C&C. Somehow, there was a trace of "PPM" in my mind, after so many years. When I was 13, I joined. Then you saw the..."naive" part of me #Tongue

I used to mod RA2 and TS with TibEd, but I learnt to mod using the .inis from PPM, fortunately. I remember my BEs almost invincible Very Happy

My first modding was probably using CCEdit to give humvees Lasers in C&C1 or something like that #Tongue

Though I don't consider any of that data editing junk real "modding". Not before I made graphics.

As for my first modded graphics, that was undoubtably when I made a buildup animation for Andrew Griffin's flame pod in his C&C1 mod-campaign "The Flame Dancers":

Started with mapping for RA1, moved on to mapping for TS/RA2, got CnC Holland mod for Generals, wanted to mod it, failed, ended up here for some TS modding help, and voilà #Tongue

On the mention of nooby mods - I loved High Tech, pretty much one of the most insane clusterfuck of units - yet, so enjoyable. Too bad, AI could not build the units.

I started off when I discovered TumSun, I don't remember how I came across it. I at first just toyed with INIs, then I tried mapping, but then, I found my calling: terrain editing.

ok...my introduction :p

My realname is Ramón. I´m a 23 year old guy from Germany.
Some more info: I´m studying some sort of engineering (cars, etc), have a gf, i´m motorsports crazy....there was a time when friends called me "the Formula 1 Enzyclopaedia" Very Happy

ok...now to my moding story:

I got in contact with CnC in early ´95 (TD demo). i played it lots of times...to be honest thousant of times.
i borrowed the full game from a friend and played without cd using a simple dos commando....i played arround with some uniteditors to mix the troops a bit.
1996 was the year of RA and Grand Prix 2 for me. i had a RAediting tool that allowed me to do some balancing and mix the units again...but nothing serious. RA is till now the only CnC that iplayed all campaigns more than 3 times...
in late 1997 i found a nice CD with editors for GP2. I started to make new carskins, imported new trakcs and car models and changed some of the textures...
i was nearly 2 years only doing things for GP2...
but then... in 1999...on T-Day i went back to my CnC Very Happy (had a intermezzo with Dune 2 and 2000).
I played TS as much as possible in this time ( i even bought a new computer for it!)
in early 2000 i got some mods from a pc magazine... ( i had no inet in this time)
as far as i remember one of those was Tiberian Sun Gold...
i modified it for me in private...
in May 2000 i finally got internet...
in this time i went back to GP2 editing...as editing possibilities did advance a lot since i got my editors for it...
but i found a nice tool called Will´s Voxel Editor Very Happy
i made one or 2 voxels for public and then i started modding ts
i made a TS>RA conversion with all builduings converted and all voxels replaced...
but than i got an HD-crash just at the day i wanted to backup it...
ztype....
in late 2000 i met Phil (founder of Blitzkrieg). he was searching for Voxelartist for his WW2 mod "Final Charge" (later merged with some other WW2 mods to Blitzkrieg).
this was the time when i was flaming a guy called Silvester_(whatever...i for got it...lets name him Sly) who made the first RA2 WW2 mod that was actually released "Deathmatch European Battlefield" (DMEB)...
some time later i read somewhere that there are 2 other WW2 mods in production : D-Day and Frontline
I always liked D-Day from the begining as the guys behind it seemed to nice Wink
Frontline was my flamming target...GermanJuggernout and me where the masterflamers against Frontline people
early 2003 blitzkrieg finally got released...allthough it was far from being finished...
when i got Generals i played it a bit and tried to become a skinner for Blitzkrieg 2...but my skills where limited at this time (only did some temporary skins for an internal alpha)
and my way brought me back to RA2....
I think i joined the guild on 17-June 03 :p
now time has come to try myself in doing mods...but somehow i lost interest after a few days...as i was basicly doing each time the same thing :p
in early 2005 i started to make some voxels that made it into several mods (eg my Apoc)...of course most of them ended in RAlike and CarniWar :p
ohhhh i like " :p "
since june 2005 i got my own CnC Ressource site and released 2 versions of RAlike (noobish attempt on recrating RA1) and 2 versions of CarniWar (which was more advanced , eg new AI for new Factions, etc).
After MadHQ left Revora because Prime got hosted i gave him a new home for his work. I´m really proud to host him, because he´s one of the topartist in the community!
in novemeber ,i think, me an Rawlo started talking about creating a new TC: "Discordia", for info see forums here at Revora Wink
oh...yeah...and then there was this funny story when i pretended to be 2 persons and especially to be a girl :p
that was really funny for me...and the other guys who knew...first i thoughed i make an april fools out of it...but then i was such drunken on my bday that i posted that funny pic of me that revealed everything Very Happy

now i´m learning since mid january to use 3dsmax for building shaping...

there was lots of other things i forgot to mention...but i think this read is long enough :p

sounds pretty damn close to mine.

I started playing Tiberian Dawn at some point when my brother got it from my cousins. Saw my cousins playing RA1. Liked TD. Wanted TS. Eventually got TS and then FS, RA2, YR, and Renegade. Heard about modding from one of my brother's friends. Started to google stuff. Came across the Afterglow site and learned the basics. Then came across Tumsun which lead to here. Lurked for a good while and then decided it was time to register. Shortly after registering came a wave of maps for TS/FS. Started talking to people like OrcaCommander, Sirmodsalot and others. Had made some actions of doing mods with some of them but none of those went through so I just focused on my mapping. Now I am relaxing from my map making extravaganza as I have been around like...2 1/2 years now and have 25 maps released I believe. However, I have my TS:CO project going and I have MANY MP maps in WIP stage still. May or may not continue my interest in modding once done with TS:CO and other loose ends.

and yea...that's my story thus far.

My shining moment... Posted a stupid question in the FAQ.

I actually found out about PPM when someone recommended it to me when I asked where to find good mods. Yeah I still remember the exact details of how I joined, I asked this in the TS lobby.
