I recently bought a laptop from my coworker, and downgraded it to XP (512mb RAM on Vista.. not happening Rolling Eyes )
The model is a Toshiba satellite A135 S2386

I've been trying now to get the drivers back for it.. the WIFI card I can't use, the sounds all play as a "BEEP", and the monitor can't display higher than 1024x768 (though I'm pretty sure it's 1280x800).. I can't even use ctrl +Z or the scroll on my mouse pad.

I've looked around for various driver finder programs, though they either cost money, or they haven't found the drivers I need. Perhaps someone who's more familiar could point me in the right directions

www.driveragent.com

You just need an account, which I think is free.

I used it to get my sound back. STUPID BEEPS!

All I know is that once you'e registered, you should have access to its hardware checker program, which autmaticcaly scans your PC for potential updates.

Or you can just hit "Update Driver". Much easier. Or go to the companys website and download it from there.

yeah, laptop is OS pre-programmed. I tried downgrading this one to XP pro, and everything was so fucked up I had to go back and put Vista Home Premium back on it (then again, 3gb of RAM is plenty.. though the vid card sucks).

Most of the drivers for laptops with OS's in them are designed for that specific OS. I know that the touchpad drivers for this one, as well as the sound and video drivers, are Vista-specific. Sadly, they aren't compatible with XP.

For the screen resolution problem, surely that's just a case of using the latest graphics card drivers? Here's a thought for the sound drivers at least, try and find out who made the motherboard and see if you can download the drivers from their website. It may even have the wireless drivers if you're lucky. If not, (and you can't find the make of the card) then you may need to buy an external adaptor.

In all honesty, if you're not planning to do much in the way of Window-specific programs then you could install Ubuntu on it or something. It's more likely to have the drivers installed by default and will still use much less RAM than Vista. If you still needed XP/Vista, you could keep both installed and dual boot. If you're not too picky about running a virus scanner then you could probably make sure Vista doesn't absorb all your RAM by stopping as many programs from starting up and disabling as many services as possible.

well what I'd want to do most on this computer is browse the internet, listen to music (plug in an ipod), play the old C&C games, and play Halflife 1..
I'm thinking it might be best to put vista back on my machine, though I'm not exactly sure how to go about it. I don't have that much experience in mucking around with OS's. I could ask if my coworker still has the recovery disc, though I wouldn't think that would be very likely.

When it boots up, does it have anything which says "Press <key> to enter recovery mode" or anything at the BIOS? What modern computers do nowadays is have a recovery partition where it just reinstalls Windows from.

If you really wanted, you could give Linux a try but I never got online play withing with TS/RA2, which I'm assuming is something you'd probably like.
