Red Alrt 3 will be released on Steam next month, as part of EA's new stance on the digital distribution platform.

I think this is great, I get almost all of my games on Steam now, and I might actually get a few EA games now, including RA3, that I've avoiding buying so far. Plus most, if not all, EA games on Steam are released without 3rd party DRM, so there won't be activation limits or anything.

There's no guarantee there. Many games have come out on Steam and they still contain the physical version DRM. Notably SecuROM.

What you'll end up with is double DRM. Even worse than before. They should do what Ubisoft did with the new Prince of Persia. No protection whatsoever! But this is EA we're talking about. The old codgers running the show know jack shit about the business they run. Their advisers tell them that DRM will make money, they say buy it. It's that ridiculous.

I think Steam is DRM enough - it's a fair balance between DRM and usability. You can install on as many PC's as you want, you don't need a CD and you even get updates automatically. They should get rid of the annoying SecuRom & Co. bullshit.

Yay, Icy comes out on nowhere and tries to flame STEAM as well. But at least lowering the protection of the original DRM, helps out (Hey, no activation limit = happiness). STEAM DRM, while might not seem as the most effective, is certainly the most user-friendly one.

Note:EA games are only available in US and Canada. Why does the STEAM allows regional locking, is beyond my knowledge.

Same reason why we Europeans are not allowed to get games from the English market, instead of buying games that have risen about 20% in price because Steam changed the dollar sign into a euro sign Rolling Eyes

Apparently the only DRM that will exist is Steam's. At least for the games that have just been released (Mass Effect and Spore are the two I remember). It actually makes the games worth buying now! Steam's DRM isn't really intrusive and I've never had problems playing Hl2 on multiple computers, along with the other games I own through Steam.
It's a shame these games are only in the US, as soon as they're worldwide I can consider actually buying them possibly maybe one day, perhaps.

Please PINPOINT where I flamed Steam in my post. I know you can't, because I didn't. Stop bullshitting.

I wasn't referring to the possibility of DRM, I was stating a fact. Although they could use 3rd party DRM, they have stated that they don't. Also, DRM is listed on the Steam store pages when it is included in a game, and the EA games don't have any listed.

I'm hoping they also release their back catalogue; it'd be nice to be able to get all those games that you can't find in stores any more.

You might be interested in this site, it has loads of golden oldies for cheap prices. Not sure about how many games are made by EA (if any) but it is definitely worth a look at.

Yeah, I've seen that before, I'm just kind of reluctant to use multiple digital distribution systems... It'd just make things a little less convenient.
