NPatch replaces your gamemd.exe with a hacked version which includes the new features. The mix is just for anything it might need extra, like new strings, the temporary new main menu graphics (which you might want to disable) etc.

Grab the NPatch MDK and read through the help file a bit to see what new features it enables. By default the NPatch doesnt actually do anything (except the new main menu is on by default for whatever reason), it just adds more logics you can use in your coding.

Be sure you want your mod to rely on it, because a lot of features would have to be cut did you decide not to use it anymore. And remember every other online player needs NPatch to be compatible with you (and you'll need to disable it in order to join regular YR games).

Also, there is Ares under development which doesn't patch the exe at all, it instead injects its code from custom DLL files (which you could write yourself if you were so inclined). Although it will implement many features from NPatch eventually, they will not be implemented using the same key words or in the same way and so you will need to alter your mod again at that point, especially since it already has features not in NPatch such as firestorm logic (but then again its not yet a public release).

Depends on if they want the new logics or the multitude of engine bug fixes that Ares will be providing and if they want to spend the redevelopment time if they are well into the modding project already. Should switch? Almost certainly yes, especially if and when ares reaches and surpasses feature parity with NPatch. Will switch.. depends on if mod developers want to spend time rejigging their code. For mods just getting started it should be considered if its worth the time implementing NPatch only logics or seeing what progress ares makes over the coming months before implementing any exe patch features.
