Watched a docudrama about the Solar Storm aka ZTYPING BIG EMP BLAST.
It was researched that an uber solar storm can destroy ALL power plants and transformers (sub-stations) and leave us with NO ELECTRICITY FOR A LOOOOONG TIME O_O. But there's a simple solution to it right? Or maybe not. It was said the next Solar Storm will occur in 2011. If I'm not wrong, Canada was a victim of mass black out due to a Solar Storm. So what would you do in the aftermath of an uber solar storm?

If everyone's a ninja, they'd be practically cannon fodder.

"The Inverse Ninja Law states that the effectiveness of a group of ninjas is inversely proportional to the number of ninjas in the group. While a single enemy ninja is often portrayed as a significant threat to the protagonists, a large group of ninjas is significantly less of a threat, and as such is easily defeated. This is sometimes applicable to other close combat–oriented minions as well. "

Nice. I shouldn't have mentioned "ninja-style" -_-

Well, I would just live in a windmill if the solar storm occurs (as I can generate electricity with wind power)

Solar activity is next scheduled to peak at the end of 2012 going into 2013. (Mayan calendar terminus anyone?)

Most solar activity that can be damaging does not occur very frequently. More often than not any flares or CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections) will be deflected by Earth's quite powerful magnetic field. Unless it is a situation where the CME/flare can pass through our magnetic field, the most probable real danger is to orbital satellites.

The last time we had a worthy CME/flare of the "panic" kind of damaging was 1859.

Uhh, SomeGuy, if the solar flare/CME is opposite of Earth's magnetic field it'll simply just go through like it never existed, fry all solid-state electronics and jazz. Can't seem to find the source >_>

Most flares are not opposite (or powerful enough) of the hemisphere they approach however.

Remember it requires two portions, magnetic alignment (North/South) and strength.

If the flare is not significantly stronger than background cosmic radiation, the magnetic field deflects it (or at least degenerates enough energy for it to be harmless) regardless of alignment. As I said, Earth's magnetic field is quite powerful. (I once heard from somewhere it's like the 5th most powerful in this solar system)

Yes a CME with the enough energy and the right alignment would fry every unhardened electronic device in the hemisphere it hits, but the intervals those occur are quite rare compared to a human lifetime.

In the end, we'll see what happens.

If it destroys our technology its the same thing, for us.

Gives us a nice second chance though.

I'll have 3 guns and enough ammo by then. Also, I know how to cook my own food, hunt and live in the outdoors.

So yeah, I'm pretty much perfect on this account.

Unfortunately, we're entering a reversal phase in the magnetic field, starting from South America. To hell with the environmentalists, they can't do anything about the magnetic field, and when the reversal completes, it won't be safe to walk outside because of the cosmic radiation.

Or more accurately, lots of people with their compasses out will start walking the wrong way. Magnetic field reversals have never caused mass extinctions.

Hmm, I start thinking about storing some electronics in the cellar...

(even getting gas would be problem for a while due to some electric devices)

Estimated damage in my home: 2000 €.

yar, what you really have to worry about is.... the future, our stupid leaders, and scientist developing technology thats srsly not needed (IE. Implanted chips), yar, I have to admit, chipping is stupid as it removes privacy thats not in our computers, but our personal lives. The future is stupid.

Quite interesting this subject:

-The thingy in Switzerland(that Particle accelerator or how its named),is going to start in 2012
-This solar flare or whatevar thing.
-Global warming thing(I don't believe in this thing, but something IS happening,we can't deny this.)
-Economical crisis

Pretty pink future,right?

I'm wondering what is going to happen in the future.

Global warming IS happening, denying it is just pointless. The question is whether or not humans are causing it.
Also, the LHC in CERN is turning on again in October and the economic climate is less bad. It's like we're approaching the bottom of a sine curve.

Not necessarily what I meant. Cosmic radiation has caused inexplicable burns and illnesses in some astronauts (I believe Apollo 8 was when they started noticing it) even in their shielded spacecraft. It's not like cosmic radiation will make you spontaneously combust, but it'll burn you pretty damn bad.

http://www.universetoday.com/2008/06/21/2012-no-killer-solar-flare/

I'll just leave this here (and ignore some of the ludicrous statements here, like the possibility that such an event could "destroy" all our technology)

I personally cannot wait until 2012, when every doomsday prediction falls flat and the lunatics promoting them become the laughing stocks of the entire planet.

Or, when the real doomsday occurs, the Rickrollocalypse, when Never Going to Give You Up plays non-stop, all-day on Dec 21, 2012 on all devices capable of broadcasting sound for no explicable reason and defying all logic and science.

Err, doesn't NO ELECTRICITY FOR A LOOOOONG TIME freak you out? Yes, you'll get to see pretty lights in the night sky. But looks can be deceiving. That Solar Storm has the ability to ztype power plants and it's sub-stations. Canada was a victim of mass black out due to power shortages (the power plants were screwed up by the solar storm). Think about it. Should it really happens, none of us can get an internet connection and post in PPM forums for some time; this could be measured in months or years. Although it won't kill humans (EMP has no effect on organic material), how long can you survive without electricity, given that you have a disadvantage of not having any experience in living like a tribes man, who, for many generations, lived without the ease of electronics? Meh, simplest thing you can do is pray that it won't happen.

Also, Lt Albrecht is right. The only two places that will be effected by a fictional "super solar storm/flare" are New York and LA, haven't you watched ANY disaster movies?
