Yeah, got bored, looked at PPM,at my large amounts of free time,so...

I'm asking:What about another graphics contest?

Not a voxel or map contest(as we recently had some) an SHP or some sort of graphical show-off,to get more activity and have something to see.

Also, themes after what I see are a bit too limited, with pretty hard subjects for some.

I wouldn't make it,nor be a judge,as I don't feel like having an enough big level so I can consider myself good enough to be a judge or so.

Also, its ztyping vacation, there shouldn't be any kind of time limitation.

Even if I would love to participate in a shp competition, second semester starts the next week, so that would leave me out.

I say we keep it simple at a .w3d.

Properly boned and set up for Generals or Renegade
Under...1500 polies
Textured
Must work perfectly ingame
-right scale
-no showing bones
-rotates correctly
-working housecolors (Generals)
*insert artistic critique stuf f here*

Then i can't take part as i have never modded one of these games and also don't know how to export a model into the w3d format nor which restrictions or special features it has.

Can I say no?Thankyou.

First,I didn't specify if it has to be a 3D contest. If it would be,consider that you+1,2 guys will enter the contest.
2.Nobody asked of an PS work contest, why not?
3.Again,for DF,sorry to say it,but it sounds very shitty to have a poly limit for a 3D model, which sorry to say it,but its PLAIN STUPID.Not all people here like Generals,so I was thinking to use a more reliable engine than Generals/Newer CnC games
4.Maybe we could do a bigger contest with a bigger prize, such as announcing it since now,and have something bigger to do(lets say,if its a building contest for YR(Hey!We never had a SHP contest for YR) we could have to do,lets say,a power plant,a conyard,a barracks and a warfactory.

Lets try to think more so we won't get stuck in limits and other whatnots.

Id be willing to participate in a shp competition- w3d? do we have enough people that do that? seems like maybe an open GFX comp would be good or something since there's a few 3d modelers and PS artists I guess. @ LKO that mammoth is downright fantastic Very Happy

There are many people here who can do 3d, but only a few of them actually do w3d (Me, Dutchy, and.....). It is very simple to go from any file format that renx can import to .w3d. Of course you didn't specify that it had to be 3d, it is just what I suggested and would like to see. Thats why I suggested it Wink

The reason I suggested w3d is that i would very much like to see more Generals modders and perhaps having access to some free assets might inspire people to do so. The results of a .w3d contest could also be used right away in modding while something else like a PS picture might not. Things like poliy limits are out of my control, and while they may seem arbitrary, they are a nessecary fact of life when it comes to 3d modeling for games. The limits aren't that had to go with, if you don't mind that some of your more fine details must be done via texture.

We had an infantry contest I think it was a year or two ago and iirc, only 4 people entered. So for file formats in C&C games, you basically got .shp, .vxl, and .w3d/w3x. Theres been ALOT of .vxl contests but not so many for .shp and none for .w3d here. I guess .shp would be the way to go, as I can very simply screenshot my model into a .shp (but hey! You still have to go with the limits of a pallet, what kind of limit is that!)

Honestly,I'm a bit thinking at either using a reliable engine like YR('Cause TS has been used HUNDREDS of times, and YR never had a comp,IIRC) either doing a PS freestyling competition OR a 3D freestyling competition(where the basic format to be 3ds and to have HIGH poly models.I don't wanna kill myself with your lego mod....sorry)

TPAM- how is that conducive?-
about the w3d - youve made some great points on why- and Id try and make something but Id hope for at least more than 3 people to enter. at a minimum a new contest is badly needed---

OK from what I've seen (forgive me if I've missed someones post) People are throwing out ideas but no one wants to step up to the plate and organise something. So I'm saying from this point on, in the not so distant future I will organize a modeling competition. The rules will be relatively loose and File format will not be an issue. so in essence, as long as you can operate some sort of 3D software you can enter.

Give me a few days or so and I will get a brief written up. Now I know some of you are busy, and I will try to sort out a time frame that suits most.

So all of you, if you want a 3D comp (not taking into account if your busy at the current moment or if you think "ahh I cant use W3D, only gmax") put your hand up now so I can see how many people would join and if this isn't just a waste of time.

And I don't want to hear "Oh I'd join but I don't know 3D, Just say If you can.

@SDKH

Sounds good man, but count me out. You should also make rules that the model made by an entry can not be based off a Spore created model.

I look forward to seeing the guidelines you set up.

That means you also should ban 3d programs allowing you to "generate" 3d models out of pre-created parts.

IIRC Bryce allows you to place objects on objects, allowing you to create humans carrying objects or vehicles, stuff like that.

Exactly, everything should be created by yourself. Not basing your model off of pre-made crap.

Ickus I was just thinking of dominance war and the rules will be similar.

Brief

The brief will be announced when the competition starts (Don't want you cheeky bastards getting a head start). But I can tell you that it will cover a wide range and give you a lot of artistic freedom. enough to either make something awesome or enough to get lost in your own Ideas.

Specifications

There is no restrictions on what modeling software you can use, However everything must be made completely from scratch. No importing existing meshes and modifying from there.

You can include painted environments, skies, effects.. basically, anything you want. This Is recommended but not mandatory, you will not be marked down if you don't do this, it would just be nice to see for presentation sake.

Your entry must be specifically created for this challenge. Do not use any pieces from previous personal/released works. If your entry has been released and or shown to the public it will not be considered.

There are no lighting restrictions, no poly counts, all modeling software is allowed.

Final submissions

Beauty shot.
You are free to do whatever post effects you like on this image. You can create multiple angles of your character or just one big version of your character. Image must not be larger than 1000x1000.

Presentation shot.
This Image must contain two angles of your design. Post effects from 3d softwares or 2d programs like Photoshop are not allowed in this image. The only adjustments allowed are: Brightness/Contrast, Levels, Sharpness, and Hue/Saturation. Background must be a flat textured (grainy, etc) image or a pure or gradient color. You cannot put any objects, stars, things, fire, or people in your background. Image must not be larger than 1000x1000.

Construction shot.
This image should depict how your character was made. You can include wireframe shots, multiple angles or just one big wire frame shot. Image must not be larger than 1000x1000.

Texture sheet.
This Image must include your main texture. Normal and diffuse are not necessary but recommended, and you will not be marked down for not including it. Image must not be larger than 1000x1000.

Concept sheet. (Optional)
If you want to, submit any concepts you have done in regards to your final design. This is not mandatory, it is only for the judges to get a greater understanding of your design process.

Judging

Judging will be made up four categories totaling 100 points. There will be three judges including myself and two others. (PM me if your interested)
Judging will be as follows.

25 points for Model detail
25 points for Texturing
25 points for Creativity
25 points for General design

There will also be public voting
1st will receive an additional 20 points
2nd will get 15
3rd well get 10

Wips

Throughout the competition you will be encouraged to post wips to ensure fairness and receive feedback on how to get the best design possible. Whilst daily wips aren't necessary, you must post at least one wip every two weeks, however it is strongly recommended that you post at least one evey week from the point you start until you finish. All progress will be shown in the competition thread, not in the media hut or separate threads. Note, all competitors must officially enter the competition by announcing it in the comp thread.

For the best end result I will try to base the comp when it is the most convenient for everybody. I'm thinking either within the next week or so, the next month or maybe longer (leave you dangling).

So some suggestions on when the start date should be set would be good. Oh and I'm thinking of making it a 30 day comp, so about a month. Any comments?

those are all agreeable- thankfully the texture shot is optional because a lot of people like to rip authors off.

awesome, I am glad im not the only one. lol

robopope, oy just on that basis it should be enforced. One it gets people to build better layout habits as far as their uvw maps go and of course reduces the chance of rips..

I think milestones should be enforced for additional participation points. this will help in getting a more active contest, rather than waiting till the judging. What this does is allow people gain insight, perhaps even intimidate the competition, and perhaps a small percentage, influence them and inspire them. :p
This also allows to see how the original WIP has gone.

I think with the time I have, I may be able to participate, either as a judge if needed or as competition. Twisted Evil

I am very curious to what the brief will allow.

looks like people are pretty in to this, so I will announce the comp soon.

Also I've made a few amendments to the rules.

Texture sheet is now mandatory, however it only needs to include the uv map. Normal and diffuse are optional.

Wips must be posted every two weeks. There will be leverage. (not all of us make models like clock work) If you cant make the by weekly deadline just leave a comment explaining it in the comp forum.
