how do I change an image into a 3D object? Do I need specific software or is there a way to do it without software?

Uh.. what do you mean? Taking a 2d image and turning it into 3d? That's not possible...

Unless you mean taking a 2d image as reference (blueprints, I dunno) and putting it into a 3d program to sculpt the general shape based off the image.

I read somewhere, "dont remember where though" that you can take a photograph with your camera, and turn it into a 3D object. just trying to figure out how to, or what I need to do it with.

er.. I don't think it's possible

They have things like motion capture where they have points plotted on a special suit, and super high speed cameras that capture the points and make them into 3d. But that's for 3d animation..

Yeah, turning 2D into 3D? No such thing is possible, unless you count fake 3D with some photoshop magic. Its like turning people into objects (a bucket of water?), not likely to happen in this universe.

EDIT:
May have found where you read it though, theres Photosynth and Make3D which turn pictures into somewhat 3D, but not the 3D I'm thinking you're looking for. Or theres Autodesk Inventor, which is pretty much a CAD based, you draw it in 2D, extrude it into 3D. Good for machine parts, gears, etc. Flat things.

You can do this but only with buildings. If I find this I tell you.

lol, well you cannot do with software, unless you are working with actual materials like sculpture. ;p

Closets thing as far as I know perhaps...height maps or topology maps? it takes the contrast (lights, darks, etc) of an image to project out a 3d image...

Although there is no effortless way of taking a image and converting to 3d.

...At least not with "perfect" results...the only things are fake 3d, which only adds perspective or the illusion that it is 3d...

It can be done, but not easily, not freely, and not very well.

it's ultimately better if you just make the model, take several pictures, then make textures out of the pictures.
