Lego C&C contest? need feedback
In light of the recent Nostalgia thread I noticed a load of us are into legos, including myself. I was thinking the possibility of getting a contest together for making some C&C units out of legos. I personally haven't dug out my legos in a couple of years, but I'd really love to take em out and make something awesome like the good old days.
Heck, we could even get some other communities into it as well, if we can get it big enough maybe, just maybe, we can get EA to throw us some prizes for the winners.
They'd be rated for originality, detail, resemblence to the original unit, bonuses for functionality (spinning rotors, turrets, deploying, shooting bombs, etc). It should be a physical model, and not a virtual one.
It would have to be something new and not seen before publicly. If we see it's been posted on brickshelf or something before the contest is over, it will be disqualified. Almost like a voxel contest, except without the dangnabbed normals.
I'd be up for running it if needed (with help, obviously), though I'd really prefer to be a contestant. Give me some feedback _________________ The Fall of Hammerfest - Epic Tiberian chain story

Yes, this has to be done. I've been looking for an excuse to play with legos for ages, and do it without anyone calling me an alabaster retard. QUICK_EDIT
Lol, I have only one Lego vehicle still with me, the rest I got rid off a couple of months ago

Since I'm propably unable to participate, and I do know something about Legos (well, something is underrated ), I can be one of the judges if you want me to. _________________

I am kinda embarrassed to have a line of small lego-tanks, complete with rotating turrets within view of my desk.
Oh, and six different ships.
I may just consider entering. :v _________________ YR modder/artist, DOOM mapper, aka evanb90

IIRC there was a software in which you could've made anything out of Lego, taking in consideration that many of us lost our dear collections. QUICK_EDIT
Ok, then. Now we need is somebody leading the competition, a set of judges and someone who can formulate the rules; though the comp leader can do this. QUICK_EDIT

I really don't like the idea of having virtual models compete with physical models.. Unlimited pieces in any color, would likely crush the physical candidates.. We'd either have to do all virtual or all physical, and I really don't want to have an all-virtual contest, there's really the thrill of putting it together with your own hands and your own pieces that would be missing the point altogether IMO.
Physical models require more thought and skill to work with a limited palette, are more traditional, more nostalgic/authentic, have more in regard to structure and functionality (Digital models don't fall apart if you build them wrong). Building a physical model is also a heck of a lot more fun in my opinion.
Also keep in mind, you can buy any and all pieces that you use to make your model in LEGO's builder program.
My lego is so well packed away for years, i doubt i'll enter. Although i've got this little tingling in my fingertips.
*hmm*
A full working, 50cm big mammoth with motorized tracks using 4 indepenent engines, a rotating turret, hydraulic raising barrels and working head- and backlights would be surely something great, which i would never take apart again. All these parts should also lie around in my basement.
*hmm*
But no, sorry. I won't enter. It would be too much work.
But i'm eager to see the results. _________________ SHP Artist of Twisted Insurrection: Nod buildings
I would really love to enter this competition, even though I have an entire box full of fake legos, 2 warships, I really can't enter, because I lack technique pieces and actual/real lego to use, and besides that, I lack the money to support myself in this _________________ Please, I DON'T read the signature rules of the forum. Alrighty, Crims, Deformat, and LKO would probably make the best judges..
Altomare I'm unders the assumption you'd rather be a participant. I'll get a set of official rules/ deadlines together, and maybe a banner or something. Keep your eyes peeled. _________________ The Fall of Hammerfest - Epic Tiberian chain story

Maybe I still have somewhere CHEVA which is similar to LEGO, but there are no parts usable on tracks (only wheels or rotors) + it would be 3x bigger than same model from LEGO.
If it was paper CnC model competition I would enter probably, but I have enough things to do now anyway.
I'll be just unbiased watcher. _________________

@hotrods: Lego is a form of modding: You take apart the original and put it together differently. There are many, many parallels between modding and lego! Last edited by Orac on Tue Aug 25, 2009 5:03 am; edited 1 time in total QUICK_EDIT
I have a tub full of legos my cousin gave me some years ago in my storeroom. I may dig it out for this competition but there are some stuff that are in the way I may enter this comp though, if I can... _________________ The future belongs to The Forgotten!
Oooooh, FECK YEAH! I'm entering this, most definitely.
I have like 30 ships on display in my room and another 30 or so (completely assembled, so I'm not counting the disassembled ones) stashed away in my cupboard... Probably more, I spent like $1500 on lego alone last year...
But hmmm, what should I build, ideas, ideas... I'll have to do some more shipping on bricklink, I suppose, meheheh...
Anyway, I suggest you make this a fairly flexible contest, allowing a little freedom in what you make, preferably anything that would fit in the C&C universe, instead of just perfect replicas of existing C&C units. QUICK_EDIT

Just make a deployable conyard, that would be awesome :p.
I would love to enter, but all the legos I have left are 1 small lego technic set of a bike, so all I could make with it would be a bike, or maybe a small orca, but I guess I won't have enough pieces for an orca . QUICK_EDIT

I've done that... ages ago. A deployable C&C1 conyard. The back opened to have the hangar inside, the piece that was folded to the left side had the turbines on it, and the front part with the driver's cabin could be transformed into a crane and clicked on the left side of the building. _________________ Last edited by Nyerguds on Wed Aug 26, 2009 4:32 pm; edited 1 time in total QUICK_EDIT
