So I took a look at reading Higurashi No Naru Koro Ni
Subject description: Onikakushi-hen
...and found it to be a rather interesting yet convoluted piece of seinen manga (had seen a couple clips on Youtube of the anime version). Granted it was only about half of Onikakushi-hen maybe a bit more but it has enough interest in making this question.
Is seinen manga and anime worth exploring into more? I know older-aimed variants of shonen such as Gundam are quite worthy but the accursed tvtropes has introduced me to whole new types of animation worth checking out. (After all, it has found me a few games over the last 9 months.) Some are definite widget series, some have understandable premises and some like Higurashi need to be read to know anything.
What say you PPMers? Is seinen worth exploring more? (Within reason of course, hentai may be all well and good but a good plot is hard to pass up) QUICK_EDIT
No Deformat, Hentai means Pervert in Japanese, but Western people refer to Hentai as Explicit Adult Anime/Manga.
oh, and Higurashi no naku Koro ni is awesome, you'll never think of lo- Super Deformed characters again
And if you're willing to see over-fucked up violence, and have the stomach to bare it down, then by all means, go ahead _________________ Please, I DON'T read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
I love Genocyber. It has a scene where an helicopter shreds its minigun right through some kids. Brain matter flying, eyes exploding, blood spraying, bones breaking.
Now THAT'S transcending entertainment, and also a beautiful ballet of anatomy and violence. QUICK_EDIT
I'm not very exposed to manga/anime but I do like:
Patlabor (OVA and Movies)
Ghost in the Shell (And Stand Alone Complex)
Ninja Scroll
Akira <- Seriously, don't know what that is? GTFO!
Wings of Honneamise
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Dragon Ball Z! (DRAGONBALLZ!) Was my first exposure
Gundam Series (Only really got into Gundam Wing.
Angel Cop <- Pretty unknown to most. But good story
SO, while most of this line up isn't what I would call VIOLENT, some of it fits the bill. All of them had epic stories, so I don't regret watching them. _________________ You come for the modding but you stay for the Crap Forum. QUICK_EDIT

DAMN STRAIGHT, That scene where the detective wakes up to find his body opened up and his guts taken out haunts the crap out of me.... *shivers*
oh, and crazy androids with awesome transformation XD
@Regulus: OMG, PATLABOR, I remember having that PS1 game...I should watch it o.o _________________ Please, I DON'T read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT

Well this is correct, however we don't know if SomeGuy had ecchi in mind instead of hentai instead, but well... I prefer sticking to the not-so-guro stuff. _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. Last edited by Destiny on Tue Sep 15, 2009 3:38 pm; edited 2 times in total QUICK_EDIT
Seinen is a very mature oriented anime/manga genre. Yes it includes the subgenres Hentai/Ecchi but that's not everything. What makes it stand out is that seinen often has very elaborate and mature writing and thoroughly disproves the notion of animation being nothing but kids shows.
I watched the entire anime series of it on Youtube just over a week ago. It does rule. It puts everything to shame in the mystery/horror genres and I mean it. No cheap cat scares, no lame predictable storylines, no rehashed concepts (at least that I was aware of).
And strangely enough it teaches you at least a few Japanese phrases such as "uso da!" (Liar! You lie! or varying equivalent). QUICK_EDIT
yeah, tough my best friend hated it and put it off that the entire series purpose is to show cute lolis getting murderois and bloodthirsty, but she's got the wrong impression, i was quite suprised, tough it's a bit longer ago since i saw it but i was impressed with the story, until the last few episodes you're thrilled about what is going on while revealing part for part through the entire series, it's just cool how the puzzle fits together , and such a good one, but i knew from the beginning that something was wrong with the woman...you know whom i mean, not to spoil, the burned one.
the live action on the other hand takes it more lightly but for a live action it's well made too, tough i don't like rena or mion that much in the live, they don't really fit them....
but its still good. _________________ Hydraw Art on Facebook QUICK_EDIT
Trust me SomeGuy, Never EVER use anime to learn japanese from the start, you can only use anime/manga as a basis when you are at Japanese level 2 XD
And yes, Higurashi does put Horror to shame, they don't have that crap that they repeat over and over again in some movies >.< _________________ Please, I DON'T read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
well i've looked on higurashi more at a "gruesome detective story" than a "horror" actually...
ah soeguy, if you haven't seen the live action/s you might take a look on them, the 1st movie is out and it's about the first 4 episodes of higurashi, the second is also out and is called "higurashi no naku koro ni chikai" and i dunno it might push more forward than the series, it's good still, but you better have seen the original anime before anyone watches the live action, it might be better in the end.
the second live action has unforunately no subs yet ...gah i can't wait for subs...
