I think it was a mix of both, iirc. There was a magazine article early on that described the inspiration for the unit styles. I'll see if I can find it.

The bulbous design does fit the soviet style build of their aircraft but not much so of their vehicles. They favor a curved cut on their edges and no hard edges like of the Allied (Western) style vehicles with some exceptions of the European variants IRL.

Like DaFool said that the bulbous design of the Hind E model is a good concept to base the Soviet units on, but not entirely. A T-72 does not really look bulbous except for their rounded turrets. (Which can't stand to an AP round worth a crap)

I like for the Hammer tank to look a little more like a T-80 tank than some retro-future bulbous concept of a Hind style tank. It makes it look so fragile...
