I am not familiar with online storage, but I was told that there are places on the web that you can store data "like all my mod stuff" so you can recover it if you lose it. Does anyone know of a place that has free storage?

Rapidshare, Megaupload are the namely ones. I recommend Megaupload though, you get better download speeds and such.

Something to note is that (usually) if you don't have your file downloaded within 30 days, it will automatically be deleted (unless you have a premium account)

May I suggest as an alternate to invest in portable hard drives?

They have no strings attached unlike online backup sources, and these days are fairly cheap for certain amounts of storage. Add to that, you can backup anything you want on it and have it secure.

I had one, but it was destroyed from the fire as well. and even though external hard drives are nice for backup data, they too like any other electronic will suffer from breakdowns. I'm looking for a more permanent solution. What about a web site? I mean can I make one for myself?, and do I have to purchase a .com address? or can I make a site and just publish it to the web? Hell I dont know this is all "dont mean to offend anyone" greek to me.

Websites are a whole different story. Yes some hosting services do allow effectively unlimited storage and bandwidth, but most do not.

Running your own server (and it associated needs) and registering with ICANN is far more expensive/complex.

But running a website just for the purpose of online backup is kinda lame.

"The internet" doesnt just store stuff. Your data will still be kept on something physical, so no matter where it is, its always able to be destroyed.

That is true, however the likelyhood of something being destroyed on the web is far more unlikely to happen verses my case, A damn fire, and basicly everything I had is gone. Now had I uploaded all my stuff to a web storage I'd have it all back.

Which is one of the key problems with "cloud computing".

It can be fucked with, it can be lost/destroyed. My biggest concern with "cloud computing" is Internet security. Everybody who knows anything about computer security knows the Internet is a sieve. Anything can be intercepted, anything can be cracked, there is no guarantee of privacy and no guarantee of security. Yes there are ways to mitigate some of that (and a few clever ways to avoid the blatantly obvious dangers outright) but the fact remains.

But I digress, this is not a discussion about the inherent intricacies of next generation computing, it's about crevio finding reliable (and nonflammable) storage.

Thanks for the suggestions guy's, I think for now on I will just burn my stuff on to DVD-RW disc's. That way they can be edited at anytime and just to be safe I'll burn an extra copy. I feel this is the best way for me. and again, thanks guys.
