Winter 2009/2010 Small Buildings Contest [TS]
Yeah! Let's have another small buildings competition.
Only rule is it has to be for TS/FS. Judges will ultimately make the final decision on the categories, but my suggestion is something along the lines of..:
Code:
Out of a total 75 points:
Originality: Is it an original design? 10 points
Functionality: Is it a useful design? 20 points
Cohesion: Does it look like it fulfills its described purpose? 15 points
Aesthetics: Is it well made, with proper damage/snow/building frames? 20 points
Brownie Points: Does the judge like it? 10 points
Although extras will not count against you, they will give you the possibility to gain "extra credit" points. It's possible to make higher than 75 points.
So. judges? rationalities? who's in? _________________ "Reality is a lovely place, but I wouldn't want to live there." -Adam Young Last edited by daTS on Thu Dec 17, 2009 9:13 pm; edited 3 times in total QUICK_EDIT

i dunno. technically it would work for both. It's just if you make it the full size 2x2 (small building max size) for RA2, then it exceeds the size for TS by a few pixels. If it's the max 2x2 foundation for TS, it can also work in RA2, it'll just be slightly INSIDE the boundaries. _________________ "Reality is a lovely place, but I wouldn't want to live there." -Adam Young QUICK_EDIT
if the deadline isn't too close, i would give it a try and join this contest. I have already an idea what kind of building i could do, that would be also useful.
I agree that it should be a TS/FS contest, as small 2x2 TS buildings can be also used as big 1x1 buildings in RA2. _________________ SHP Artist of Twisted Insurrection: Nod buildings
To bad this is going to be only for TS/FS, If you decide to add RA2/YR I'll jump in _________________

It's up to you WHAT it is, and how it functions, just know that if it's captureable, it should ideally have a buildup animation so you can sell it if you need to. I think 15 January is a good deadline. Fixed title to appropriate.
Requirements:
the structure in .shp format
any corresponding animations or snow frames in .shp format
Must not have been shown to public.
**ingame screenshot of your structure.
any specific code needed for the structure to operate correctly
Note: Structures with buildup animations are more likely to be rated higher than those without them.
The more i look at it, the more i think i won't be able to join until i get SHP builder working on this computer..
We need someone to take all the entries (be sure and not include your name anywhere in the entries) to submit to judges as to prevent from encountering any biased opinions.
//Edit: **Ingame is not required, but highly advised. _________________ "Reality is a lovely place, but I wouldn't want to live there." -Adam Young Last edited by daTS on Tue Dec 08, 2009 5:26 am; edited 1 time in total QUICK_EDIT

I hope you realize you have just disqualified yourself. Or at least that entry.

Orac, you'll take them to submit to judges and ensure quality control? _________________ "Reality is a lovely place, but I wouldn't want to live there." -Adam Young QUICK_EDIT

Quality Control: Ensure the quality of entries, that's to say, anything that's blatantly spam (such as a green box with blue pipes) is not to sent to the judges for grading. This leaves more time to grade those that deserve it. _________________ "Reality is a lovely place, but I wouldn't want to live there." -Adam Young QUICK_EDIT
Nah, don't make a quality control, or you soon have some kind of censoring.
The judges will surely be able to give bad things a low number of points without spending too much time on it. _________________ SHP Artist of Twisted Insurrection: Nod buildings

Actually I think having a bad entry is good, since you can use it as the base of the scale, giving full points to the best, and 0 points to the worst.
BTW, If you don't mind, I would like to be a judge in the competition . QUICK_EDIT
Alright, I guess I'm in on this one. So after what I just read posting wips or progress pic's gets you disqualified? _________________

You're not supposed to post WIPs, since that would show which is your entry. As the judges aren't supposed to know which entry belongs to each participant, to ensure no favouritisms. QUICK_EDIT
O.K. I kinda understand. So then the person collecting these cannot be a judge then right? and his responsibility is to distribute them to the judges without them knowing who they belong to? So if thats the case, the person collecting them could easly "secretly" "without our knowledge" leak info to the judges of who's is who's and the well known members may get an advantage. So there is really no way to totally control favortism. Orac seems to be a trustworthy source, so I'm still in, I'm just saying... _________________

Alright, this sounds like it's coming together, so far I have this:
Judges:
Machine
???
???
Reviewer:
Orac
We need 2 to 4 more judges to get this puppy on the road. If we cannot start it officially by the 15th of December, then we will set the due date one month after the official start date. (IE if it starts 21 Dec, then deadline is 21 Jan) _________________ "Reality is a lovely place, but I wouldn't want to live there." -Adam Young QUICK_EDIT
Couldnt we have a split group? what I mean is there should be expert and intermidiate groups. Cause some of these people have been modeling for years and I believe it would be impossible to compete with some of these guys, no what I mean.... _________________

Just have fun, improve your skill. Competing with the best in the community is a good way to understand how they got to where they are now, and hopefully start on the same track QUICK_EDIT
question, Are these going to become public assets after it's all said and done? Reason why I'm asking is because what I am making is going to be put into my future mod and dont want it released to public, atleast not yet anyway. _________________

daTS didn't mention it, but considering that the only contest, AFAIK, that didn't make the entries available to the public was the 3D modelling contest. Though, in a second thought we judged the renders in that contest, and not the actual models, so in a sense, they were still available to the public. QUICK_EDIT
Meh. I may participate with some tall detailed civilian structure.
Also, I'm in favour of making all entries required as public releases. It really would be a shame otherwise.
Questions though:
- What are the size limits, this being a small buildings contest
- somewhat offtopic, but can anyone direct me to a 3dsmax script (I might as well get more familiar with 3dsmax as I'm doing this) for TS lighting. I only have a ra2 lighting script now. QUICK_EDIT
I agree, I'll let this one go to the public. I'll just make another for the mod.
@MT, I havent been able to find a TS script for max yet either, but isnt TS and RA2 lighting pretty much the same anyway? _________________

Alright, looks like we've got four judges:
Machine
Aro
Dark Templar
Rico
Submit your entries to Orac with all of the following:
-the structure in .shp format
-any corresponding animations or snow frames in .shp format
-Must not have been shown to public.
-ingame screenshot of your structure. (Optional, but highly encouraged)
-any specific code needed for the structure to operate correctly
Formal rules:
-Must work in TS/FS
-Must have a base with no more than six (6) cells, and no longer than 3 cells in either direction. 2x3 or 3x2 are the largest base authorized. If it exceeds this, it is automatically disqualified.
-must not be taller than height=4. If it exceeds this, anything outside those bounds will be truncated and judged as-is.
-must be submitted to Orac BY 15 January 2010 (submissions after 00:01 GMT 15 Jan will be considered late and disqualified)
-may not be submitted before the official start date of 15 December (submissions prior to 00:00 15 Dec will be considered early and disqualified)
-must not be shown to the public previous, and must not be someone else's work.
-Team submissions ARE authorized.
-Multiple submissions are authorized, however, only one may be rated (if you submit multiple entries, specify which one is to be rated prior to the 15th. If not, the latest entry will be sent.)
Orac, Aro, Machine, Rico, Templar:
I will send you details on everything in a PM shortly. _________________ "Reality is a lovely place, but I wouldn't want to live there." -Adam Young QUICK_EDIT

I got an email from apoc saying there are some beat keys to give away if anyone had a contest. _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT

Yea, I've got that email as well. The problem is that these results must be revealed very quickly if these keys are to be given. Remember that the game will be released in march and they'll certainly disable the beta one month earlier, because of the whole 'going gold' process. QUICK_EDIT

0. Zero. None. Nothing. Not a dickybird. Nil. Nought.
Not surprising... When you limit what people can submit, it destroys peoples interest in entering. If this competition would have been open to Ra2 as well, there might have been a few more people interested... _________________ MadHQ's Graveyard - Click here!

Wait a minute, I thought it was going to be for both? Mines for RA2, so I guess I'm out then. _________________

I'm sorry to say that, but i'm out of the contest.
I simply can't get the building finish till tomorrow. Due to Christmas/ New Year's Eve etc and my recently stronger participation on DTA as well as my ongoing work for TI, i didn't had enough time for the building.
I'll release it as a standalone SHP when i've finished it in future. _________________ SHP Artist of Twisted Insurrection: Nod buildings
