Electronic Arts have made Tiberian Sun and the Firestorm Expansion package become freeware. Click on the Image below to check it out!

Set in the early 21st century, Tiberian Sun once again pits the Global Defense Initiative against the Brotherhood of Nod in a struggle for control of the planet. With an epic storyline that unfolds as play progresses, players learn the reasons behind the worldwide outbreak of Tiberium and what happened to the notorious Nod leader Kane, who was presumed dead at the end of the first Command & Conquer.

Next year, Red Alert 2 will be free, don't worry. That would be approximately in 1 year and 2 months or something like that. But it depends on many factors that are beyond my scope.

IIRC, the sourcecode for TS and previous C&C games was lost during the EA buyout.

So how is the second decade going?

TW, KW, RA3, Up, TT.
And Tiberium was cancelled.

Which is too bad, because we were gonna get renegade!

Anyways, they should release a no cd pathc for everyone who has the game already. Or actually, I guess you can just D/L it if you want to play without CD.

Yeah! All we need now is the source Smile You think EA will give it away? it isn't like it's valuable when they give away the game for free Wink Also, it's about 10 years old, I don't hope it is still being used in new games :p

It might not be working right because, unlike the earlier games they've released as freeware, this one isn't the proper ISO images. The download is just the SUN folder copy-pasted out of a TFD install along with a registry file.
I'd much rather they gave us the ISOs. I mean, do they really need to be so protective of the serial numbers now that the game is abandonware?

I found that now (even with the original TS) it'll IE when you try to go online while there is no entry for WOLAPI in the registry or when the value data of the InstallPath string value is wrong. So in short, TS will IE when it can't find find the internet (wolapi) files.

Alright...

First go to start, open 'Run', type regedit and press enter.

Once the register editor opens, browse to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE (or if you're running a 64 bit operating system it's Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node).
When you're there, if it doesn't already exist, right-click the SOFTWARE key (FYI, in the register editor all folders are called keys), go to 'New' and then click 'Key'; name this key "Westwood" (without the quotes obviously).
Now create another key inside "Westwood" and name it "WOLAPI".
Once the "WOLAPI" key has been created, left-click it once, right-click in the right pane, go to 'New', click 'String Value' and name this new string value "InstallPath".
Finally double-click "InstallPath" (so the 'Edit String' window opens) and under 'Value data:' enter the path of WOLAPI.DLL (for example C:\Program Files\Westwood\Internet\WOLAPI.DLL).

If WOLAPI.DLL (and the rest of Tiberian Sun's internet files) are indeed present in the path you entered, you should be able to get on XWIS perfectly fine now.

So now can the TS "unofficial patches" be released in binary format (that is, as an .exe)? I didn't even dare to try them after how they kept failing on my TFD YR.

What unofficial patches? Confused The only ones I know about are DLL files, which will obviously remain DLL files.

Nice stuff!
I'm a pretty lazy bum and won't download this now, so can anybody tell me what the exact license is under which they're releasing these classics?

I agree to Hyper though, I can only hope the next step (after making all of TFD freeware) will be the release of the source code.
Just recently the source code of a game I like a lot (Wrestling MPire 2008: Management Edition) was opened and I'm already on it fixing things that always annoyed me. I would so love to get my hands on YR properly.

Highly unlikely, as they re-compiled at least both TS and RA2 (not YR, they hex-edited that) for The First Decade (so they would accept the DVD instead of the CDs).

I don't know about the earlier games, but they will not have but a single copy of the sources, trust me on that one.

Given that it is the TFD version of the game, I'd assume so...

WinRAR keeps getting errors when it tries to extract the files to C:/Program Files

Any suggestions? I extracted it to a random file on my desktop, but if I try to run it it tells me that one or more .dll files is damaged or missing. I tried to "run as administrator" and that just gave me a "unable to initialize" error

I also tried to just copy and paste the extracted files into C:/Program Files -> but it still gives me the .dll error even if I "run as administrator" ... slightly annoying ...

wouldn´t it be just a simple fix to use MicroTS and copy the mixes from TFD over it?

They hex-edited YR no wonder I could never get the TFD version to work. If they have the TS and RA2 source code then that's fine because it makes the older TD and RA1 code pretty much superfluous. I wonder why they haven't done that?

I was about to ask why edit RA2 using the source code and then Hex edit YR but since YR's gamemd.exe is based on RA2 game.exe it was possibly easyer just to hex edit the changes in since that part of the exe in theory should be the same as its predecessor.
