I was thinking that the overlord could have a realistic upgrade system, by which you deploy it into a structure and buy a structure upgrade that changes the tag undeploysinto=normaloverlord to =gattlingoverlord. Or whatever you bought. Now this is a lot of micromanagment.

But we have a second option. Instead of buying an upgrade, we can just deploy it, have that building use a negative oil derrick finders fee, and change into a new overlord. Now, if you do this you have to make it so it deploys like normal>-$200>tower>-$100>gattling>-$100>bunker or something. This makes the micromanagment go away, because you can easily group select twenty and deploy them twice to get what you want.
This way does have some problems. 1. You have to "rank" the upgrades monitarily, which may cause balance issues. 2. The bunker HAS TO BE LAST. Because you can't have a unit with battlefort logic deploy into something. 3. If the player doesn't have the funds, it will still do it. His money will just drop to zero.

problem with ur second idea.... if the player already has 0 cash.... and deploys... it will get the upgrade basically for free

Plus theres too much micromanagement involved, i think we shall just make the regular one buildable from the war factory, and then have the prequisites for the others as their upgrades, so you need a gattling gun to get gattling overlord, a bunker to get bunker overlord ad prop tower to get prop tower overlord.
