I've not yet progressed to using any 3D software program but I have done a little searching to see what is available.

This is a site I found that has a "Free" noncommercial 3D model library which includes a military section.

The site also has a list of programs for download including 3D, 2D, Animation, Game Design ect. You can search by Free NonCommercial, Commercial or All Licences.

I hope members find this site useful.

@ Edge: Yeah, I found this after seeing the work by Cranium. It has some good things on there I thought others might found useful
