I've been pondering the idea of an OpenSource RTS engine ... though I admit I probably wont be the one to make such a thing (not by myself at anyrate) at least, not soon.

Still, I wandered what others would like from such a program? Features and capabilities and so fourth? Has anyone worked on anything similar before?

Well, I'd like Ares tbh.

Edit: Or spring, once it doesn't act so damned buggy for me.

-It should support different image formats and 32bit graphics with alpha channel.

It should also support 2D, 3D polygonal and 3d voxel based units and buildings.

-It should allow the creation of your own unit types (and possibility decide where they can be produced).

-Units should have as many options as possible like different types of movement , multiple weapons (like in Dawn of War), and different sizes with proper collision detection.

-And it should allow multiple layers (like in Earth 2150).

-Maybe fully destroyable terrain (like in Worms) so that you could bomb everything away with heavy artillery nukes and such, until only water or lava is left.

I'd want a fog of war, a % of accuracy set per unit, and the possibility of capturing structures with base functions. I'd want a nice UI with customization:
if your mod has land, air, and sea they should be separate tabs.
Cloaking and cloak detection also make good features.
Finally, give the option of builder units making structures instead of the traditional CNC style.

No

Generals has

-a poly limit which is too small
-annoying mismatches
-lack of proper naval implementation
-camera zoomed in far too much

You can have a navy in generals but yea if you were talking a new game engine this would be nice (i like navys, just not the scale of them in so many games)
As for zoomed in i was prety sure that could be change threw modding

spring is alright and openRA is nice other than that i dont know any free or opensource RTS engines (ignoring the project which became OpenRA)

I like 2D game engines partly bacause they are to an extent easyer to work with and also because i believe they could be so much more, in the day you had limitations but now im sure so much could be done. any 3D game has a polly limit, 2D games dont (however pixels come in to account, which would be a problem you would also have with textures for 3D game)

Edit
I fail to find words for orcas comment
