I'm very satisfied with all Samsung notebooks I've come across for some years now. The only brand I'd put into the recycle bin (pun intended) immediately is Dell. Bad overall quality, hilariously stupid design in the inside (you need to disassemble the ENTIRE thing to replace a ztyping USB port) and a support that can't be called 'support'. QUICK_EDIT

My experience with laptops goes as follows:
I've had an Acer laptop (relatively high-end) that failed almost to the day after the (three year) warranty ran out. It also had a hardware failure about two months after I got it which they put down to a virus (but they changed the motherboard, figure that one out). I currently have an HP Envy 14, although I've only had it for 3 months although I've had no problems with it yet. HP's low end stuff (i.e. Compaq) has pretty shoddy build quality but from what I know, their high-end stuff is pretty good. Obviously you're not looking for something like that though. My girlfriend has a Toshiba laptop that's been going for about five years now with no hardware issues. One of my friends has a Sony laptop he's had for about five years too with no faults, although I think he's upgraded the RAM in it (and has hardly used it for the last two years).

Oh thanks for showing me thas. Makes me feel quite comfortable with this Acer laptop (not). I guess I'll take even better care of it.
Funny thing is that my previous laptop was an Asus, and died from hardware failure. And like your Acer, it died within the following 2 weeks of the warranty expiring. The time that it expires almost makes you wonder if they build these things to fail just after the warranty expiration or something, however logical that may be. _________________ YR modder/artist, DOOM mapper, aka evanb90

I have a Toshiba Satellite A355 that has gone through the desert combative sands of Iraq, and still runs great _________________ "Reality is a lovely place, but I wouldn't want to live there." -Adam Young QUICK_EDIT
Asus is at the top. Never buy an HP; they die way too easily.
Asus is indeed nice stuff from what i've experienced.
As for HP....i had no complaints with mine up until about a week ago. it wasn't anything that caused it to die, but it started having a grinding sound roughly 1 year after buying it. It ended up just being the fans on it of course and is now fixed but still not exactly a desirable thing to have to take in your not quite 1 year old laptop in for a fix. Luckily it's still under factory warranty and i had bought a warranty thus the fix was free.
But like i said i have no other complaints thus far with this HP laptop which costed roughly $700 by itself (according to a currency calculator that's roughly 528 Euros)
My dad owned a Toshiba. It was pretty good really. Provided the model he bought ended up having a crappy vent problem with it's fans in which dust easily got stuck in it causing clogs which a normal compressed air can couldn't clear and then the fans stopped working causing overheating. I don't think that's common with most of their models and i'm assuming they quickly discontinued that design due to that flaw. His Toshiba did however die after 5 years. The only other thing i can really say i disliked about his Toshiba was the fact that its sound quality from it's speakers was quite crappy. _________________ Kalistia Crestland (2)

Im still running a Toshiba Satellite from late 2003 no problem. It kept up with the times surprisingly well, but it was from their "desktop equivalent" line of systems. Mine is a hand-me-down from my dad.
The harmon/kardon speakers are pretty boss, along with the 17" screen. However, its had its share of issues. The RAM fried itself after the first year... however, its been fine ever since it was replaced. Currently, it has 2GB, which is the maximum that its board can handle.
The HDD died in 2005 or 2006 -can't remember. The keyboard lost a few keys from excessive use, but I got a new keyboard 2 years ago, which has held up nicely. I'm inclined to think that my dad types way too roughly. The battery is long toast, but I can't fathom one that will last this long into use...
So after all that, it's still going strong. Mine will disintegrate most likely at some point...
I also have a Dell under my university's special warranty which fixes everything for free. Ive only had it for 2 years and had to replace the power supply, motherboard, and keyboard.
Two freshmen I know each bought computers, one bought an Alienware, and the other bought an Asus. The one with the Alienware has significantly lower specs than the Asus, but the Asus guy paid a fraction for his machine. We make fun of the Alienware guy for his poor choice. _________________
Strange. I have a Dell laptop that I've had for a little over two years and not once had a real issue with it. It gets a bit warm, but hey, it's a laptop, I expect that. _________________ KGR | AT
