Subject description: Sleep Mode

So recently I've been having trouble with comp, now when I put it into sleep mode for extended periors of time (say over an hour but mostly when I put it to sleep over night) when I wake it up, the power button with go from flashing to constantly on, but the screen will remain black, a 'no signal' message will pop up, and then it goes black again. No amount of button pressing will make anything appear, and hitting the power button on the comp itself will not turn it off. Does anyone know what the problem is, or am I just never gonna be able to put my comp to sleep again?

Sometimes it will randomly wake itself up from sleeping and be in the state described above.

I'm using Vista, but the options were identical, so lets see how it works out...

Vista has some serious issues with sleep mode and powering off. I find the best way to eliminate the issue is to use the high performance option and shut the monitors off after 10 to 15 minutes.

Or just power it down when you go to sleep. I never really understood why ppl let their PC on while they are asleep Confused

Some people don't like to wait.

I haven't had a pc since Win '98 that it works well with.

My desktop is still running right now. I never power off my PC; it's actually better to leave it running since you put less strain on the components. Boot up and restart are the heaviest use times for your internal components. The less you reboot or power on, the better off you'll be.

So you're spending an extra £200/$300 or so a year on electricity powering a PC just to save on component wear? It can't put that much strain on it. I've restarted my computer 1365 times in the 3 years I've had it (if my primary HDD is to be believed) and no components have failed yet. It's easily got another year in it before I plan to upgrade and even then I'm only replacing graphics/CPU/motherboard.

Electricity is cheaper here, I draw less power when I'm not there, my monitors turn off and it doesn't matter. I don't see the need to power off my PC for any reason, short of a damaging thunderstorm or a winter weather storm.

Orac's link seems to have fixed the problem. As for power usage, how much power can a comp in sleep mode with the monitor off really use?

Perhaps, but I think a restart now and then wouldn't be to bad for your OS.

@DaFool:I have an article about that here somewhere, let's see...
It says that an economical PC will use a good 50 watt when it isn't doing anything, adding a decent graphics card would quickly bring the usage up to 100 watt.
An LCD screen uses 30 watt according to the article.
