I was browsing around the old WW FTP because I can and I found this text file. Go have a look and read the SERIAL NUMBER section. I find what they allow to be very interesting.

I've noticed on LAN games that there can be two players with the same serial in a game, but more aren't allowed. One quite respectable WW policy, which was changed in YR though.

So, since most games came on two discs, this allowed for each player to take one and play between each other.

Highly admirable feature, Westwood. Certainly something they've got right.
