Found An Interesting List...
http://www.testtrack4.com/cracked/appcompatlist.txt
This is a list of all programs that Microsoft has tweaked Windows to allow it to run correctly. Tiberian Dawn, Tiberian Sun, Red Alert 2, Generals and Renegade made it to the list, but no Red Alert or anything EA made post-Generals. Just goes to show how shitty Westwood really was. Oh, and some of your favorite applications are on there too... like 3DS Max or that application you use that replaces a Microsoft product.
In any case, I thought the list was interesting. Amazing how much time Microsoft invests in making sure some products they don't make all run correctly... _________________ KGR | AT

I think it's a bit unfair to focus on Westwood. If you look at the list, virtually every major game series ever is on the list. Quake, Half Life, Unreal, Tomb Raider, Age of Empires, Worms. The list goes on.
However, it's still interesting to see that Microsoft actually does stuff like this, although I do wonder what it is they do to make them work. Let's face it, there's never been a Windows Update pop up saying it will make certain games work better.
Also, how did you find out about this? _________________

[EDIT] I don't think it's so much making them actually run better so much as it is detecting that application so Windows does something specific. _________________ KGR | AT

There are several updates that improve compatibility like this one. If games (or applications in general) don't use Windows API functions correctly, or they use memory after it has been freed or whatever, Microsoft adds such a hack to make it work. They have done this for many many years, decades. Why not just block the apps that rely on undocumented behavior? _________________ QUICK_EDIT
