I want to test something out and want to check it with online play. I log into my account and my friend logs in to his account. I have 2 computers running off my dsl and when I log in it boots him off the game page. What do I need to do to play online. Last time I played I had dial up

If it's the same game and your both using the same internet that's probably never gonna work. Better to just link them together using an ethernet cable or wireless connection and using the LAN option.

Yeah it should work, or use wireless for both comps. Beware though, the response time is a little too long.

You have to use a crossover cable to connect 2 comps, not a normal straight thru cable.

If you have a spare ethernet cable, you can make your own. just google the diagram for a crossover cable. Very simple to do. If my memory serves me correctly, I belive all you have to do is keep the blues and browns together, and just crisscross the orange and greens. But get the diagram to be sure.

Dont you have a 4 port router? or you using a one port dsl modem?

If you are using Vista/Win7 you'll need the wsock32.dll too, just Google it...

This would explain why I can't play with my brother (in the same house) and a friend at the same time..

If you have a 4 port dsl modem/router then you do not need a crossover cable. You just need to configure your network properly. If both computers have the wsock32.dll on them and they both use seperate YR discs and different serial #'s , I dont see why it wouldnt work.

Sometimes even configuring doesn't needed. Try it first with simply plugging them in.

I could play War3 on LAN when the keys were the same and the games were the same and we just pluggd the PCs into the Ethernet switch (Yes, I don't have a router, I only have a mere 8-ported switch at home, which has 3 PCs on).

OK I found this.....

http://blog.lib.umn.edu/ayubx003/dividebyzero/2008/06/02/how_to_play_red_alert_2_over_l.html#close

Computer that is running Windows XP sets up. Computer that is running Windows 7 I have an issue

Quote:
If "NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol" isn't listed, then we need to install it.
Click "Install..." then select Protocol, then click "Add..."

You should see NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol listed (I already have it installed). Select it and click "OK".
Return to the Property page, you should now see the new protocol listed just above "TCP/IP."
Select it and click "Properties"

I don't have this on here. So...i have made progress...

Not needed.

That's what wsock32.dll fixes. The game will use TCP instead of IPX.

Win Vista/7 dosent have IPX, instead it will use TCP/IP coupled with the wsock.dll

I think the xp ver needs the wsock.dll put into the ra2 directory also for it to work with a win 7 comp.

LAN with RA2 sucks. If you're on the same network, you should only need the UDP patch.

Have you tried giving each computer an IP?, it's very simple, The names here aren't very accurate but they are obvious and easy to figure out.

in XP:
Control Panel > Connections > Local Area connection > Properties > TCP/IP V4.

IP address: 192.168.1.X Where X is any number from 0 to 255
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
And for the option below subnet mask use the same IP adress as the second computer.

Favorite DNS = Same as the IP of the other PC.

Advanced Options > DNS > Uncheck Register DNS Cache.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

On Win7, It's pretty much the same, Network and sharing center > configure devices/connections (found on the right side, I don't remember it's name)
> local area connection > proprieties

The same settings go here but X on IP address must be different.

Both XP & Win 7 show the lobby but they can't see each other. Was trying to test some things out using my two computers to play online, but I log in with my account and friend logs in with his account and knocks me off. So trying to play a network game but that isnt happening either.

Well what Kcirevam said should work. Make sure they have different IP addresses though (change the last digit). Also make sure they're in the same workgroup. Go to My Computer -> right click -> Properties and find the tab which allows you to alter the work group. If they're both the same you should be able to see each others shared documents by going to My Network Places or the Win7 equivalent.

It's already been explained.

1) Grab your ethernet cable.

You should have got one free with your router at least, I know they come with Xbox 360s as well.

2) Plug one end into one computer and the other end into the other computer.

3) Each computer should then recognise each other, by giving the little notification pop-up box on the task bar.

4) Go to My Computer -> right click -> Properties and change the workgroup name so it is the same on each machine. AFAIK it defaults to MSHOME on both Win7 and XP. Do this on both machines.

5) On XP Go to Start -> Network Connections -> find your LAN connection -> right click and choose Properties -> scroll down on the componants list and choose TCP/IP -> click Properties -> click "choose IP address manually" -> under IP address type 192.168.2.1 -> click in the subnet mask box and it should add 255.255.255.0, leave it -> leave default gateway blank. Click ok and you're done.

On Win7 go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections, choose "view network status and tasks" -> under "active conncetions" find your LAN connection, to the right it should say "Connection: Local Area Connection" click on "Local Area Connection" -> click Properties and it should come up with a similar screen as XP, again choose TCP/IP and click Properties -> click "choose IP address manually" -> under IP address type 192.168.2.2 -> click in the subnet mask box and it should add 255.255.255.0, leave it -> leave default gateway blank. Click ok and you're done.

6) Go to Understorm and download the RA2/TS LAN patch, stick wsock32.dll into the games directory on both computers.

7)

Please note this is entirely untested for RA2/YR and I do not guarantee that it will work whatsoever. Try before dismissing.

You don't even need to set a static IP if DHCP is working correctly. Might need to flush the DNS cache and reboot both computers.

*sighs*

And I went sleeping with the knowledge that that thing works there...

He has a working DHCP and WLAN, guys. Either way, shouldn't matter. I guess the workplaces differ because Nikademis couldn't tell me if those are match.

Also, call me simply Graion. Sometimes I thought I should recall myself as Mr. Dilach, but it makes no sense... #Tongue
