I am trying to play a freshly downloaded version of TI on my new laptop which runs Windows 7 (64-bit)

Although the main menu highlight each option, deeper menus have no change in the button when it is pressed, and scrollers do not change what is displayed.

For example: I can get to the "skirmish" screen, but selecting/deselecting "mobile bases" shows no visible change, and though I can reach the map-choosing window, scrolling does not move the list. BUT if I click on a map and return to the skirmish menu, the new map appears.

sounds like you have a bad case of pissed off registry bro.

Could be a hardware error, although on a newer laptop I doubt it. What's your system specs?

Also, welcome to PPM. I'm daTS, i'm usually an asshole (so I apologize if in the future i'm a dick for no apparent reason), but TI likes to be mean to people, even me, and I work on the damn thing.

Also, delete DDRAW.dll from the TI folder (back it up though, just in case) and see if that helps. If not, put it back as it helps a bit with random laser and disruptor IE's.

Try running TI in administrator mode.

Sounds like the presence of ddraw.dll is most likely to blame... I thought Aro stopped including it by default Confused

Yeah, the DDRAW.dll is not there.

As for system specs, I'm not sure what I should copy down...

XPS L502X

Intel Core i5-2410M with 2.30 GHz

Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GT 525M

ON the other hand: there was an issue with a different game that required me to re-install the c++ redistributal-whatchamacallit. It didn't help, and no other game (see:steam) was affected, but could that be the cause of the issue?

You could try installing the latest version of your graphics drivers.

Have you tried starting TI with different resolutions? You can change the resolution in SUN.INI under [Video] before starting the game.

Steam!? Haven't i heard long ago that running Steam in the background messes up C&C and causes a lot of trouble and problems?

Actually, I was still able to access changing resolutions in the menu, since there wasn't any scrolling needed. None of the resolutions changed the issue.

I also exited steam to be sure, but I have never had the problem you're describing, LKO.

A different approach to narrow down the problem: Can you play original/unmodded TS without problems?

Actually... I don't know. I don't have TFD with me at the moment (just moved into dorm)

I don't suppose Roller Coaster Tycoon would use the same thing (code? software?) for their buttons?

EDIT: buttons work on that, so they probably aren't the same.

Steam runs fine for me while I play any C&C... so yeah, Steam isn't an issue at all.

Tiberian Sun is considered freeware. You can download it from the EA site.

I'm not sure where you got that. Everything on the C&C website just leads back to buying TFD.

If I'm the only person who's had this problem, then I'm betting its something stupid I did with the C++ thing earlier. And anyway with classes starting its a moot point. I'll post again post Thanksgiving when I have something to compare it to.

EDIT: I forgot to mention. This game is incredibly well done. The one thing I hope for is reversed locomotives to put on the backs of trains

TD, RA1 and TS were released freeware however they cannot be downloaded from the EA website anymore. One place you can download TS is at CNC-Comm Center.
