Subject description: Giant Ants from Fallout 1/2 Converting.

I know I'm going to be facing wrong perspective's on these Sets though... so apologies. :X

"South Idle"


"East Idle"


"West Idle"


"North Idle"


I'm sorta confused on how to set them up as SHPs. When I export the GIF file into the SHP Builder, the images are all combined together and not animated seperately like how it should look like in the original GIFs... So uhh... help me? Sad

They would be a nice replacement for the RA1 Giant Ants, especially for TS/RA2.

Well I have found 5 Sets which seem decent enough to make them work.

So far this is what we need for a somewhat decent one right?

Death

Idle

Melee Attack

Range Attack

The Idle one is done. I just need help making Color Remap Variations to give each type of Ants some distinction.

I'm planning on the following Ants for now once I finish Ripping all the necessary animations and convert them to SHP's.

Anybody got suggestions on how to stylize their color mappings?

Psychic Ant - Mastermind Clone without the Overload

Spitfire Ant - Ranged Unit that shoots out Fire Missiles

Plague Ant - Desolator and IFV "Demo Truck" Rolled into one.

Warrior Ant - Melee Attack Unit

Worker Ant - Takes the role of Engineer (i.e: Tech Building Captures/Repairs)
* I'm thinking this could just be a full body Remap similar to this:


Miner Ant - Name says it all...

Tesla Ant - Power of the Tesla Tank with the Durability of the Rhino.

Digger Ant - MCV Equivalent

Destroyer Ant - Siege Unit, Think of it like a mobile Grand Cannon

Swarm Ant - It's basically a Harrier under a new Skin.

May I ask, why are they gif if you took them from the game? having a GIF stage in between only reduces quality further of the conversions.

Would be good if original artwork was extracted as bmp/pcx/png to presere its quality.

Also one thing to decide is whether these are supposed to be infantry shp or vehicle shp, as order is reversed for the other (see original game artwork) when start ordering the frames.

Animations wise (idle etc), its best go with infantry order and write sequence.

I have them all in PSD format right now, I used a FRM Viewer, Print Screened then manually reanimated them all. All the Ants would probably typed as Vehicles.

I just posted them here as GIFs to let you see them moving.

Each of the Sets seem to amount around 8-12 x 4 (North,South,East & West) Frames basically.

Well there's technically another 2 directions, one for facing True Left and True Right, Fallout doesn't use a True North and True South as far as I can tell.

A better idea would be to extract the 3D model from fallout 3 into 3DS Max or Blender and then render out the facings and animations as required.

Your West frame is actually pointing Northwest and again same for North frame which is pointing Northeast... Other problem is the centering, which is not done as say west one is actually hugging the west edge as opposed to facing it only, shps require the artwork be centered for game to know the rotating point and maintain selection box in right place...

Hmmm that sucks, My Laptop can't handle Fallout 3 ... :X And I don't own Fallout 3 to get the models from it.

And I'm no good with 3D related stuff.

Can the ant's be recreated with Voxelling though? Maybe I can try to trace it or something then just base it from there.
