Red Alert 2 - abandonware?

Somehow I was asking myself this, since I haven't seen TFD in game stores for quite a while.

Thing is, since in late 2009 TS was made freeware, and in 2008 RA1, and in 2007 TD, why wouldn't we get a freeware RA2/YR?

Maybe if we send a letter from the modders to the new EA dude (the one who replaced APOC) we could get it?

Just a thought.

I see TFD quite a lot in the retail stores.. Best Buy.. Target, that sorta thing, over here.

And I'm not sure about the time lapse's and such, but could it be APOC who helped with the releasing of the freeware?

After the fail of C&C4 its unlikely they'll release their most popular WW C&C for free when TFD, EA Classics and SoldOut game series still sell it. They probably don't get that much from RA2 now but I doubt they are still feeling generous.

TFD is everywhere in the UK, for like a £10 in some places. I also noticed there is two box arts as well...

Imo the main reason isn't TFD (hardly anyone buys it now + the likely reason for most people who bought it where anyway RA1 and TD, so there aren't any reasons to buy it since long ago), but that Apoc isn't community manager anymore and the new one doesn't care beyond his tasks.

Btw. In Germany you definitely can't get it new anymore + at least on Amazon.com it is also only available from resellers (=EA doesn't make any profit)

Seriously? I thought it sold very little, the price dropped incredibly fast. After a few weeks it was dirt cheap.

And it still failed completely even from that perspective when compared to older C&C games (which were always selling millions before RA3) and other strategy games.

Actually, I think it's the other way around. I don't think C&C before EA sold quite as much as you think it did.

I haven't searched much about those numbers, but according to this list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_PC_video_games RA1 sold at least 3 million, TS 1,5 million, and both TW and RA2 1 million units in different timeframes. So that list isn't a very reliable source nowadays either, but I think it's pretty clear that all of those have done better than C&C4.

Red Alert was in Guinness World Records for some selling record, can't remember the details. I also saw a mention in Wikipedia that C&C games broke 6 world records, but they don't mention which records.

Why would a site dedicated to modding older games be more accepting of such a terrible game?

I had an open mind towards CnC4 but in the end it failed on every aspect.

Why can't you people admit it is not terrible, I mean I said it was nice, not great, not good, defiantly not perfect. But Everyone one the other side always says that the game is as bad as being violated with a Spork!

Before this gets out of hand, I think the "Me Vs PPM" should be split so that people who like RA2 could continue as they were.

Sorry, but as an individual with an opinion and the ability to express it I will. In my opinion, much like many others', that game was terrible.

Wouldn't have even been that bad if they hadn't stuck CnC all over it.

The only thing that I play for in it is the leveling system, which is flawed as it is. Otherwise, it is a terrible game.

I haven't left C&C, I like Tiberium Wars and Red Alert 3 and I don't really like Westwood all that much.

Not only did I say that it was terrible, I pointed out that it would have probably not been so bad if the entire CnC thing hadn't been tackily stuck on a Korean arena RTS. The music is actually really well done. It's the only reason I wouldn't remove C&C4 from the face of the Earth.

Yep, the soundtrack is undoubtly the MOST epic CnC soundtrack and some of the models and voice are useful modding cookies. Unfortunately the game sucked. That doesn't mean EA sucks. TW and RA3 was good too Smile

Ontopic: Nah, RA2 ain't abandonware yet. They're still sold around and I can still find TFD in numerous computer shops.
