I need help. Years ago, I installed an Alienware theme on my desktop. Now, I've been sick of the folder and file icons for a quite a while now, but never got around changing them. I have had the theme uninstalled for a long time, but the icons stuck. I found the folder the icon files themselves were in, deleted them, which obviously caused most files and folders take the default shorcut-icon.

Now, I can't for life figure out how to restore the default Windows Vista icons. Chancing the theme to default doesn't work, and I noticed some folders still keep the old Alienware icons, even though I've eliminated all trace of them! I downloaded a tool called IconViewer, which allows me to customize the icon for most, but not all, files and folders, from their Properties -section. Even if it worked for everything, I'd have to change each icon individually.

What do?

Use your mouse to right-click on the desktop of your Vista machine.

2
Select "Personalize" from the pop-up menu that appers. This will take you to the appearance personalization screen.

3
Look to the left of the screen under "Tasks." Select "Change Desktop Icons." This brings up the desktop icon settings screen.

4
Pick the icons that you want to have on your desktop. Or you can just click "Restore Default" if you want the default desktop icons to be restored to the screen.

5
Click "Apply" when you are done. Then click "OK" to close the screen. You should now see the restored icon(s) on your desktop.

I've done that before Cranium, but you can only change the appearance of 5 icons from there. So it doesn't really help at all.

As for Joshy, I did that, but for some reason, it did not recreate the cache file.

You might need to hunt for the actual icons inside the program/game folders. Right click the shortcut and one of the tabs has a "Change Icon" button (General I think). There you can manually select which icon to use. If all else fails, delete the shit and recreate it.

Nevermind what I said before, it does recreate the cache, but now most of the file and folder icons are gone, including the tiny shortcut arrow-thingy (just displays the above icon instead).

Note that this occurs with everything, including DVD- and HD-drive icons. Custom ones which provide their own, like game icons, are intact. Of the default windows icons, only the five ones you can change via the route Cranium mentioned remain unchanged.

That's when I go with the tried and true, delete and redo approach. Works damn near every time.

Well the problem here IS the redo part. #Tongue I can't seem to recreate the default icons. Windows doesn't seem to automatically locate them, although if I select a shortcut and go to properties->shortcut icon->change icon, the icons are still intact in SHELL32.dll. Obviously I want to restore more than just shortcuts, hence why this approach fails.

No need, I solved the problem with a workaround, a tool called IconPackager.

Custom icon images appear in the registry (their values, that is) and you can change them from there, but I don't know the values off the top of my head. I'd google it but it seems you've found a work around.

Weird shit. It still shows .jpg files with an Alienwire icon, in case it fails to display a thumbnail (for example while loading the file). God damnit, I'll never install any custom themes again.
