Am I a ripper if...
I start from the beginning.
As the final of my visual programming course, I'll have to create a shoot'em-up. So last week I decided to gather assets from Spriters Resources, and during there I noticed this nice explosion sheet from Strikers 1945 III. (http://www.spriters-resource.com/arcade/strikers1945iii/sheet/16101) The first thing I noticed on it that I was damned sure I seen the third explosion from that sheet (which ends at the credits), even if I never heard of the game before. Since then, I plan to convert some to my YR mod, but first I wanted to make sure to figure out my connection.
And 3 days later I found that sheet, I played TI and I noticed that's where the feeling come. I even checked out the mixes after, and yes, the anim is in TI with mirrored and recolored a bit.
Since TI assets are forbidden to be reused in other mods, am I a ripper, if I take those explosions and put them into my mod? Imo it isn't ripping, as you're using the original source and not the modified version of the mod.
@ArvinCool: It is just a general phrase in TI. Or do you want to go through the 3000 SHPs and list each one of them if it can be used or not? And 90% or more are made by the staff members either from scratch and only a few by modifying some existing files.

Respect, kid, respect. It can be that some stuff are there are not forbidden, but since it's a general statement, it's easier to ask it.
Besides. In Quake 3 there are INDEED some maps and textures which are GPL (free) at one place and nonGPL at another. You are not using actual TI assets, but rather assets that have been derived from same source or something very similar. There's no way you could be labeled ripper for that by any sane person. Leaving the whole 'is converting assets from other games etc. ripping by C&C community standards' stuff that's been discussed far too many times out from this one. _________________ QUICK_EDIT

If I am not mistaken, he is going to take the TI assets to save time. He could convert it(again), but the output file would be exactly the same as TI's, so why not take it from TI?

I wasn't even aware that some explosions were sprites from another game (since I didn't make those specific assets) so don't knock my asset usage decisions. In this case, no, I don't mind if you use said explosions on that website.
Also, why did you post this public? Why not just ask the direct question to myself or LKO permission via Private Message? QUICK_EDIT

Because the resources are public, even if their place is unknown for the 99%. It's an aspect of me. Community has knowledge but knowledge defines community.
Besides, I wanted to make a precedent. The more mods emerge, the more times could this be a problem, and it's always easier to refer an example.
Not to mention, I want to extend the community's thinking, I doubt many of the people here ever heard of Spriters Database, not even checking it out and search for potential mod assets. FYI, I already converted some of the Tekken 3 anims from that page for EMP usage (Jin's hit FX, to be exact).
I know, finders-keepers, but meh, I never agreed with it.

Actually even Westwood's explosion textures for most part come from industry made effects packages and so do many games assets and some effects similarly can be seen in old movies.
Mine are custom and few from said effect packs so there is no problem with that one. QUICK_EDIT

everyone uses reel explosions, it was westwood's stock explosions, it was the unedited TS explosions in the beta shots, and now TI is using them, i don't see anything wrong with that, everyone worked with that, the initial deal was to have the unedited versions, unscaled, un-recolored, to edit them for their own visual taste as how they might look even better, you can see it as enhancing the original TS explosions, it is basically nothing more than that, so it's not ripping, it's refining. _________________ Hydraw Art on Facebook QUICK_EDIT
