Who is/was Will? I am wondering about it because I use some of his tools. The Voxel and INI ones, all named after Will. The sites the tools link to are all dead, if one got still contact to him, may tell him what an awesome guy he is for making all this stuff. With some minor tweaks the INI editor would come really in handy. Well thx Will wherever you might be Cool

People who browsed community forums did not identify themselves before Facebook, except for one or another person. Will did identify himself as Will Sutton. He created the first ever voxel editors for Tiberian Sun/Red Alert 2. But that's all I know about him. What did he do in his life since then is an incognite for me.

I'm surprised I never came accross with his full name, but then again, I didn't really think about it.

I remember Will Sutton, he is from the old school! Not around anymore from what I gather which is a real shame as he is one of the founders.

There was another famous modder, with the same surname by the name of Haydn Sutton, who used to make incredible fighter jet and battle ship voxels, he was way ahead of his time.

Banshee will remember him Smile

I think I remember someone called Haydn too. Those two aren't related by any chance?

Haydn's page was still online on Revora around this Jan IIRC, it's just I don't remember the exact location to prove. Probably still is.

It's pretty isolated IIRC even the Revora banner was missing too. I know I found it with a random googling on gamemod.net, maybe?

Hmm I'm sure Haydn left the community around 2003.

Will made life easy with voxel creation. I am not surprised it stands the test time even today.

Will, if you ever read this, which I most surely doubt you ever will in a million f***en trillions years, Thank you for Will's Voxel Editor. It allowed me to put forth my childhood creations into my beloved C&C games and helped me express my self creatively in a interactive way.

We should have a C&C modding history/dedication link on the main page. Kinda like how we have one for Project Perfect Mod's background. Just a thought.. Just a thought out of me'head.

It's unfortunate that we do not have a lot of info about Will Sutton. At least Banshee remembered his name Razz

I have a bit of a hall of fame in the readme for 3ds2vxl from the olden times. You might find some accurate names there.

That were times. I remember downloading Will's Voxel Editor 1 and using it for some really horrible bad voxels. Then i found version 2 beta which was a huge improvement. I'm still amazed how fast that thing rendered the voxels and how easy to use it was.
Unfortunately there was never a next version as iirc Will lost the code due to an accident which broke his PC (his cat or brother breaking his PC)
IIRC Will started on a version 3 but this never saw the light of day. This was afaik also the time the work started on VSE.

Did Will actually took part in coding the first VSE editor?

Reading that would be a whole lot easier if we knew the current download location of your stuff... Wink

Maybe someone should open up a C&C modding Wiki?

I was away from the community for a while. Maybe about a year. There aren't really many questions for me anyway and I think other people could handle answering for me quite well.

Anyway, I don't know where my program is on the internet but I'm sure someone here has it and the readme has some useful information about some of the people (especially the earlier ones) who contributed to the C&C editing community. I've always felt someone should one day pick up that information and clean it up a little, correct it if necessary, reorganize it, expand on it, and put it up on some webpages. Please if you put me up there then I request that you do not use my real name, at least for now.

Do you wanna a web space here, so your files can, at least, stay online in a reliable place?

I think 3ds2vxl actually is already here somewhere. Anyway it's not necessary for now because everyone who wants it has it and I haven't updated it yet.

Are you talking about this?
http://get3ds2vxl.ppmsite.com

This is just a temporarily solution that is hardly linked in the internet. Honestly, it needs a real home.

Maybe I vaguely remember that but I'm not sure. icyson made a banner and avatar for me that I was using for a while.

The problem is that the download of 3ds2vxl is kind of not really mine anymore because icyson repackaged it with the required SDL DLL files and a hacked-in redesigned GUI he made. So arrange with him what you all think should be done.

Hopefully some day I'll release a new version of 3ds2vxl with parallel processing support for extra speed although the voxelizer is quite fast enough but the viewer is not. I was considering using OpenCL but now I heard something about OpenACC which might be better. I'm not very familiar with these sorts of things at all. Banshee do you know anything about it?

IcySon isn't here anymore.

I think best would be if you put the 3ds2vxl code in a small library, so VSE can implement it. Then you can also instantly see/modify the imported model.

I don't really know what a library is and how to make one but I suspect it will be an awful lot of work for just a tiny benefit and does it mean my program has to become open source? by the way, can't Banshee make his program use my program without me having to do anything? I don't know because I'm not really good with such programming things.

No, I don't know anything about OpenACC.

VXLSE III is already launching 3ds2vxl to import 3D models, as long as the user points out its location.

Why is LKO wanting me to make a library then if your program is already doing what he mentioned?
