Other then posting here I haven't done any mod related stuff since October. To get back into working on D-day I thought I'd finish off the last thing I worked on, a Chinese Factory. Well it actually started as the Japanese factory but I didn't like the direction it was going in & instead of scraping it I made it defect to the enemy!

Anyway I'm still not happy with it but I'm unsure why, so I'm looking for any suggestions before I finalize it & make the damage frames.

Interior could use more machinery rather than boxes, but other than that I can't see anything bad about it, very professional looking building; Nice work as always.

It has RA2's stereotyping syndrome.  IMO, it needs to be toned down towards being a more functional building rather than pure aesthetics.

Agree with Orac. The Chinese style roof is very stereotypical. It looks bad when the German, Soviet, and other factions are played straight.

I actually spent some time researching late 19th & early 20th century Asian architecture. The design of this building is the result of picking bits & pieces from multiple buildings of the era, my main inspirations being the Tokyo National Museum & the Kaichi School.

The German & Soviet buildings on the other hand are fictional designs based on the usual stereotypical styles.

Edit: I darkened the base, desaturated the roof & changed it from tiles to beams.

Are those hanging red things (lanterns?) supposed to be transparent? IMO it looks pretty odd. Also perhaps it would look better with something more substantial around the side than just scattered boxes and such. You could give it a pipe or ventilation system or something instead.

The lanterns have been bothering me too, they need a proper texture & transparency map.

The Chinese building of that time where mainly built with wooden frames & mud walls, there where only a few brick buildings in the whole country. So pipes & ventilation systems would be way to modern.

It looks really good. The only major design thing that bothers me is the roof.
It looks like a pagoda roof with multiple layers squashed down into one. Maybe it would look better if there is actually a little space between the steeper and flatter roof, even if that goes even more into the stereotypic architecture direction. The problem imo is the pagoda like front with a clear border between lower and higher roff, while the side shingles are seamless.
