Hello, guys! So, I've had this nagging feeling with regards to the music for a while now, there was just something that didn't quite tick all of my nostalgia boxes and I couldn't put my finger on it, but I somehow found myself watching a playthrough of a mission played on the PS1 version earlier and it suddenly struck me, the music is slightly different on the console than it is on the version we have here. I'd never played the PC version of the original C&C so I had no idea there was a difference. So I guess my question is: is there a difference? Or are the tracks that are included some sort of remastered versions from a CD soundtrack without the vocal elements?

Cheers!

Edit: So I guess I wasn't looking hard enough before as I found this just a few minutes after posting - https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=119522869602

He doesn't actually say why the PS1 version had the original tracks, but I'm so glad it did. To me, the vocals make them so much more memorable, I can remember back to when I was little, playing specific parts of missions because of certain music tracks that were also playing. Ahhh, the nostalgia!

Do you think there could possibly ever be an alternate music pack for DTA in the future? It's only a couple of songs actually. Or are there issues with things like public domain?

He did sort of did answer your question why the PC version of C&C didn't have the vocals while the PS1 version did, although not directly:
Frank Klepacki wrote:
The first batch of C&C songs included voice samples. (No Mercy, Just Do it Up, Act on instinct, In Trouble, We will Stop Them, To be Feared) These same songs had these samples taken out later, after it was discovered that they conflict with the voice sound effects in the game. This is the answer to why the stand alone CD soundtrack has voice samples in the songs while the game does not.

So what I'd assume from this, is that the games at first included the voice samples on all platforms for these songs, but they were removed after a certain update. Console games can't receive updates however, which is why the PS1 version still has those voice samples.

I actually did consider including the tracks with the voice samples at some point, but I decided against it because some people disliked them and the original (Windows) version didn't include them either (and the reason for that was mentioned by Frank Klepacki himself in the quote).

I'll consider adding the tracks with voice samples in the future, provided that Rampastring can make this optional via a setting in the launcher.

Nice, thanks a lot for considering it!

And yes you're probably right, I imagine users complained about the vocals and they were later removed, that would make sense.

I actually played both TD as well as RA/Retaliation exclusively on the PS1; I didn't get a PC until a few years later. I always played Retaliation the most so its soundtrack is more familiar to me than standard RA and there are a couple of tracks that I've noticed are missed from the mod which I assume are from the Counterstrike and Aftermath expansions that it is comprised of. I did some searching and found examples of these

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VezQRfbeGv0 This was the Retaliation main theme, (which is also listed here as the Sole Survivor music, but I wouldn't know about that).

Also this which seems to actually be a VIP mix of Crush, which explains why, to me, the version in DTA always sounded familiar but different https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPHXgMwko4Y
I can understand why the original Crush was chosen over this one, though.

Oh and out of interest, I noticed the RA menu theme is surprisingly missing, which I think would work really well in game, was this deliberate?

I hope you don't think I'm criticizing at all, I'm just being a nerdy fan I guess, lol.

Oh, I love the songs with the vocal samples. Hell, Nyer adds them back, along with CnC in the 80's and co, since they are actually in the mixes but named as .var instead of .aud. To Be Feared and Crush got entirely restructured.

But yea, if there will be such an option, I'd consider that all such, including SS tracks should be added and not replace some other songs, if possible.

DTA already has Die, CnC 80's Mix etc. included. No vocals though, and if/when they will be added as an option, they most likely won't be the default. I personally dislike vocals in in-game music.

If I add the Sole Survivor remixes, I'd of course add them as separate tracks, rather than replacing original ones.

The reason why the RA menu music wasn't added ingame is really only because it wasn't there in Red Alert either and I figured it was only a short looping track, just like the menu music of TD. It seems I was wrong about the length of the track and it would indeed be fitting enough to be included as ingame music, but take in mind people would then end up having to download a 111 MB update just to have that single track added. I might still add it somewhere down the line however.

By the way, in case you hadn't picked up on this, the trailer of DTA 1.11 uses the Crush remix that you linked to, while the second half of DTA 1.12's trailer uses the Hell March remix from RA Retailation and Sole Survivor Wink

Haha no way, I had actually missed both of those, that's great. I especially like the 1.12 trailer, looks like some very cool gameplay captured. Nice music mixing, also!
