When exiting the game on Windows 7 the game stalls and get's stuck with a black screen or remains in the taskbar, without ending the game.exe process through task manager.

Is there a fix or a hack out there that can be applied to remedy this behavior?

It only happens after entering online (not LAN). It even happens with Ares'd YR as far as I remember.

I also experience this when closing YR.

If this happens to only when you play the XWIS, then the problem is wolapi.dll, the version of the libraries which applies to XWIS has these problems. Version that comes on a CD with RA2, does not cause these problems.

But XWIS doesn't (and can't) change anything.

Yet it get's updated with the 1.006 patch and again when you install Yuri's Revenge. I know that Olaf fixed it to some extent in his modifications to game.exe, but he's not reluctant to share that information.

I don't have the technical skills to reverse engineer it, but could one of you experts compare the original and his version?

Solution:
    1. Install library WOLAPI
    2. In the folder where you installed WOLAPI, replace the file wolapi.dll on the one that I put in the archive.

wolapi.zip

What's the difference between the original and your version?

I noticed the original latest version is 1.16.0
Your version is 1.20.0

Edit : This solves the problem. Thank you.

Not reluctant?

Code:
   TerminateProcess(GetCurrentProcess(), 0);
