I started playing RA again and i wanted to add some units/buildings just for fun, until now it was the "Rules.ini/TibEd" kind of thing, but now I want to add some cameos and I'm having a hard time whit it.
I managed make the .shp with SHP builder , the problem now is, what should i do with it?, where to insert it? and more importantly , how?

I'm pretty much new to the whole modding thing, this is my first time trying to achieve something more "complex" with a C&C game.

Sorry if I posted this on the wrong place.

First of all, you've posted this topic in the correct forum.

Anyway, a way to start is by downloading XCC Utilities. Install and run XCC Mixer. Browse the .mix files at the Red Alert 1 directory. Once you find a file called rules.ini, extract it to the directory of the game. Open it with a text editor and start modifying the units and playing the game to test your modifications.

That's how you start modding it. Rules.ini is written in the english language, so if you understand english, you should be able to understand most of the tags there.

It's really long ago when i last modded RA1, but iirc it was not possible to add completely new units, since the list of units was still hardcoded in the exe.
You could only change existing units, like making a civilian unit buildable and then change it into some kind of normal battlefield unit.

Since RA has iirc no art.ini (the file in TS and RA2 that tells the game how to use the graphics), it is from my knowledge not possible to add a new cameo. You could only replace an existing one.

Not sure if TibEd has any exe hacking capabilities, but for TS and RA2 this tool is an absolute no-go. Better use Notepad++ or any other good ini editor.

When you replace a cameo, then use as Banshee mentioned the XCC Mixer to open and edit the mix files.

Also check out The newbie guide in modding. Even if this is mainly aimed for TS and RA2 modding, many file format aspects and infos also apply to good old RA1 too.
