How I make RA2 cameos...
Subject description: ...from random images mashed and modified
1. Make a unit
2. Find a nice background that suits your mod/style or variety you're after
3. Find a vehicle with some attributes like overall shape that you could modify
4. Do some c&p, spray, texture and whatnot while it's still "large"
4b. Make sure to add highlights at this point to create extra contrast (shrinking involves blending)
5. Shrink to cameo dimensions 60x41 (7px height added after by the title)
6. Observe zoomed out, add some highlights, accents, unsharp mask as needed etc.
7. Replace the RGB with the cameo palette, fix any weird speckling
8. Save as cameo with XCC mixer or import to SHP Builder
9. Voila!
Addendum: In some cases, scaling down your source image from very large (1000+ pixels wide) to approx 300 pixels wide as a first stage, will help clarify what details are being preserved/lost, and thus give additional opportunity to enhance before final shrinking to cameo size.
It deserves a video of course, that's for any new beginner. _________________ If you are a MetalHead (Heavy Metal Fan) and don't want to be a metalhead, Just remove your metal ball from your head. :p .
QUICK_EDIT
In this case I found a vehicle similar to my voxel, but with a clunky gigantic gun. I chopped off part of the gun, shrank it horizontally and set it aside. I then tweaked the truck bed to give it a nice edge, shortened the storage boxes near the front, and removed the hydraulic stands at the rear. Once the shape and some contrast was fixed, the gun was re-added, with some panels and gaps filled in.
Next was to chop in the sky, a fairly easy masking job, while the gun was floating in another layer. The ground was also similarly covered, but not completely, a shrunken desert sand image was overlaid at 50% opacity. The shadows has to be merged, and various edge details had to be made clearer or re-drawn.
Lastly the whole image was reduced to cameo size, with no intermediate shrink, since the source image was already below 600px wide. After shrinking, Unsharp Mask filter was applied to give it a little more pop. The contoured glass button effect was added manually with pencil and line tool
If it's a common unit, like known tank or something, find a nice pic of it from the net, cut the part you want to use, resize to 60*48, then copy paste into the SHP builder (over old icon or create new blank one with 60*48 specs).
Then just add the text name and save. Secondary, add vet symbol and save vet version. Takes around 2 minutes per cameo set once you get used to it. _________________ Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge Apocalypse mod:
That's totally not the point of this tutorial, it's for things that don't exist. It's showing how to construct the base artwork from multiple sources to better match your brand new unit, and importantly the art style of your cameos. _________________ http://www.moddb.com/mods/scorched-earth-ra2-mod-with-smart-ai QUICK_EDIT
How to add it to the right side bar panels?
Or it will appear in the game once you add the cameo with the unit shpfiles with the same name also in art.ini and rulesmd.ini in the image=(unitsname) QUICK_EDIT
