For a unit in my mod, I have pieced together this pretty cool-looking base image that I was going to use as a cameo:

(obviously from a cut and altered HS render)
The aspect ratio should be fine.

Unfortunately!...
the best I can seem to do when converting into cameo is this:

does anyone have a suggestion how to carry it over better into cameo?

I'd crop out the bottom and some of the right edge - there's too much background.

Well unless he's saving it for Text Space it looks alright already though.

I think it may be the choppy "camouflage" pattern on the unit's body. It doesn't convert well and looks messy in SHP. But Graion is probably also right in that I could cut off some of the background and make the cameo as a whole more centered on the unit, or a section of the unit. I will give pcx a try first tho... didn't think of that possibility.

yeah, always crop your images and scale to 60x48 before shp building them. (iono if photoshop has aspect ratio locked cropping)
I use gimp because it's easier for pixely work and working with transparency... but anything works (i recommend using bilinear whenever downscaling. to keep it smooth rather than pixelated. if the source image is exceptionally huge and/or has sharp lines you'll want to consider gaussian blurring then downscaling)
Once i caught on to how simple cameo making was i was whipping them up for everything.. need a t-rex icon? -googles, crops, scales- need a lion icon? -googles, crops, scales-
It's a bit more of a pain when working with completely original units though, to get a picturesque cameo as opposed to just a screenshot of the voxel or w/e you gotta find something that looks close, or start painting it yourself, or rendering with a detailed 3d model DX
