A few days ago I got fed up with Gmax's inablity to produce renders, so I went to google looking for an answer. Luckly, I found custom scripts and utilities right off that let you render Gmax scenes as if you were using 3dsMax. I present to you my frist render with shadows!

I know this is an old topic. But what program did you use to render that? If you have a link that would be nice.

Because I use gmax all the time. Only cause that the only 3d modeling program I can understand.

I used a combo of two programs. First one is a plugin for gmax that exports your scene into a .xml file. The second one is a free program called Yafray ( Yet Another Free Ray Tracer) that takes the .xml file and exports to TGA.

Link to Plugin: (Be sure carfuly read the walk-through, it took me a few times before I got it right)

Link to Yafray: (download windows installer version)

http://www.yafray.org/

Some things I found out while using it:

- Do not give your output .TGA filename numbers, this will cause a crash during export in Yafray, so use letters only. (CAPS are okay)

-Pathlight and Global Photon (Global Illumination Setings) like to crash during export in Yafray, if you have these on and get a crash, just tun them off and it should work. I am unsure if Hemilight does this aswell.

-Anything without a texture will not be rendered

-If you have the Renegade Game Pack for Gmax, do not use its texture editor, your meshes willl not export if using them.
