When units leave range of the weapon it turns back to its owner.

You know which mods? You could look at their rules.ini, see what they did.

Personally, I wouldn't really know.

Not really, I wouldn’t ask if I could.

Is this possible with the engine? At least I'm not aware of a workaround to cut mind control links.

Fairly sure its possible with a self-EMP AE system, but I have never tried so not 100% certain and don't have the setup to try it right now.

EDIT: Something like having a secondary that self-EMPs for a second, therein losing the target, with longer range that will fire once the mind control target gets out of range of the primary. Obviously FireOnce would need to not be used and there's some other things that probably need to be managed, but I think it should be possible.

@4SG; I imagine that would cause the victim to be uncontrollable, since it would be constantly switching ownership, making it ignore orders.

What I have in mind is a limited-duration AE that has MindControl (does this part work?), fired by the controlling unit (that constantly extends the AE's duration. Thus, once it leaves the range of the unit, it'll no longer be extended, leaving it to expire, and therefore breaking the MindControl.

Honestly, I've never tried that, so I'll need to test it to see if it works as expected.

EDIT: It doesn't. Animations don't seem capable of passing on MindControl.

I found it. Mod called Revenge Now, it's chinese mod so don't be surprised. There's in video trailer mind controled unit goes far from building and becomes free from MC. Also I assume that the mod uses NPatch.

EDIT: Second video at Moddb "unit introduction" 0:20

RN uses a self-modified version of Ares, it's not stable and not available to the public for now, iirc.
