Hello everyone! January 28th, 2020 was the date of the official release of the Blizzard's initiative to remaster Warcraft 3 known as Warcraft 3: Reforged, and it was an outstanding breakthrough for the Undead faction.

A legion of angry zombies seems to be praising the game!

What do we mean with that? We mean that Blizzard has successfully created a worldwide legion of zombies with their game, which is better described in the picture below.

There are rumors that this might be the Reforged's real face.

While PPM has much more Command & Conquer content than Warcraft 3's, this news hits us really bad. So, no, we are not celebrating. In fact, we agree with Jaina Proudmore in the video below. We host a modification of a famous Warcraft 3 map, and we also have lots of Warcraft 3 fans lurking the forums. It is an appalling situation for the RTS community as a whole, but for modders or those who develop user content as a whole, it is far worse. It is so worse that one single news post won't be enough to handle the problem. So, I'll keep the mapping/modding issue to the upcoming news posts for now. For this one, we'll focus on what happened with Reforged.

So, the video above was one of the things that were promised. Together with 4K graphics, we would see additional voiceovers, animations being redone, balance changes, and even an expanded custom games creator. In the paper, it sounds beautiful, but the reality does not differ from the contaminated crates that the civilians received in the culling cutscene demo and the executive order of purging the fan base. And the rest, get out of their sight.

The contaminated crate features a bonus of 30gb of data that gets stuck in your hard disk, regardless if you bought Reforged. So, if you still own the classic CD version, you will be forced to download that as well to continue to play the game that you had for all those years. It does not add all promised features, as you can see in the video below. It is not clear if it is a matter of when or if these features promoted by the official channels will ever be in the game.

Even for those who have not bought Reforged, but own the original and the Frozen Throne expansion, several features have been removed from the game. When you expect an upgrade, you get a downgrade! Anyway, here's a fan made list of removed features of the game for both Reforged and classic owners. It is possible that some of them may eventually return:

- Automated Tournaments
- Clans
- Profiles
- Ladder
- 3D animated campaign backgrounds
- 3D animated portraits in Battle.net
- /slash commands in Battle.net chat
- Communal channels listing
- Custom Campaigns
- Battle.net News section
- Reign of Chaos campaign balance (Reign of Chaos now uses The Frozen Throne balance)

To make sure that they get more effective at purging the fan base, they have done some polemic changes at their custom game acceptable use policy

Quote:
1. Ownership Custom Games are and shall remain the sole and exclusive property of Blizzard. Without limiting the foregoing, you hereby assign to Blizzard all of your rights, title, and interest in and to all Custom Games, including but not limited to any copyrights in the content of any Custom Games. If for any reason you are prevented or restricted from assigning any rights in the Custom Games to Blizzard, you grant to Blizzard an exclusive, perpetual, worldwide, unconditional, royalty free, irrevocable license enabling Blizzard to fully exploit the Custom Games (or any component thereof) for any purpose and in any manner whatsoever. You further agree that should Blizzard decide that it is necessary, you will execute any future assignments and/or related documents promptly upon receiving such a request from Blizzard in order to effectuate the intent of this paragraph. To the extent you are prohibited from transferring or assigning your moral rights to Blizzard by applicable laws, to the utmost extent legally permitted, you waive any moral rights or similar rights you may have in all such Custom Games, without any remuneration. Without limiting Blizzard’s rights or ownership in the Custom Games, Blizzard reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to remove Custom Games from its systems and/or require that a Custom Game developer cease any and/or all development and distribution of a Custom Game. Please note that your Blizzard account can be subject to disciplinary action in event that you do not comply with Blizzard’s request or this Policy

Funny... as far as I know, slavery was abolished from my country in 1883 and countries like the United States of America (which is exactly where Blizzard is located) have abolished such atrocity even earlier. I don't need to say that such custom game acceptable use policy of doom, or whatever fancy name it gets, will be solely and completely ignored in this place. But as I said before, that alone deserves its own news post, as they've just crossed a terrible threshold.

Back to Reforged, I am really not done with it yet... unfortunately. The system requirements to use the new graphics were posted only four days before the official release date. So, it won't be a surprise if many people who pre-ordered it decides to get a refund, right? Not for Blizzard.

Refunds were, on many occasions, refused even for users who have not played the game at all. To make things worse, some people were suspended from Battle.Net and its forums for posting links or explaining how to get a refund. And I was naive to believe that the same country where Blizzard is located promotes freedom of speech. I don't need to say that such customer service is completely unnaceptable. Our friend MasterHaosis was one of the banned people by Blizzard. It's like what you do to Mal' Ganis when you play that mission from the Culling cutscene above. You kill him and he will return in a later time. And, coincidently, both are trying to purge the fan base. The meta-critic score is a testemony of this war.

Warcraft is a fantastic franchise and Warcraft 3 Reign of Chaos and the Frozen Throne expansions are games that I had a lot of fun playing. These games do not deserve such fate. Let's hope Blizzard rethinks some of their actions with all this outrage seen in the internet.

Key Words: #News #Warcraft3 #Reforged

I have one question: why?

Blizzard and its games seemingly stood the test of time, though one could argue that C&C did it leaps and bounds beyond, if our separated modding communities are anything to go by, so how could they screw up this badly?

Why did they do so?
Why purging the player base? Is this all revenge for what happened during the Free Hong Kong protests and the bans that followed?

And this "custom game acceptable use policy"...
Wow, got to give EA credit; they weren't this bad, they still allow us to break their games on a daily basis (until we knock on their doors and confess).

WarCraft and StarCraft are indeed fantastic in the literal sense; haven't played them yet (much), so can't confirm. Give me Kane, Tiberium, Spice, a sidebar and MCVs any day tho #Tongue

I find it both fascinating and disturbing how many companies we've seen in the past 2yrs deliberately try to lose money and alienate customers. Sometimes it's to push sjw agendas, sometimes it's just snarky entitled forum mods, but just as often it's garbage games or garbage code at release time.

Do you understand the concept of sarcasm, irony, and jokes? Of course, that Blizzard does not want to purge Warcraft 3's player base. However, several decisions they took seem to have this kind of effect.

EA's end-user license agreement did not necessarily allow us to do that. What happened is that the marketing department of some EA games (especially Command & Conquer) noticed that it was beneficial for their business the creation of user-created content, which is why some of the terms that were never implemented.

What do you supposedly think that everyone is thinking or not thinking? Open my eyes to what? I don't know what is in your mind. What I meant for the slavery part and the freedom of speech was not to promote a specific country, but rather remind that Blizzard must follow the laws of the United States of America (the country where they are based in) and the State of California. The laws there are very clear about rejecting slavery and about advocating the freedom of speech, especially when it comes to customer rights.

Because they don't want another DotA 2 and League of Legends to slip from their fingers; they want to be able to legally monetize everything a modder makes. Of course as Banshee stated, creating content to be resold without compensation is slavery and as such, illegal.

You give people too much credit, most outrageous events wouldn't have happened if people didn't stick their head in the sand and understood what was presented to them.

it wouldn't be such disaster if they didn't enforce the "if you make your map for WC3R, it is ours to keep"

They are now offering a full automatic refund to those who raise a ticket, regardless of how many hours players have spent on the game.

This is the first time I've seen Activision actually take concerns over media this serious.

Thanks for the tip.

Update: Here's Blizzard official response for several of the problems reported in this news post:

Kaivax wrote:
Hail War3 Players,

We’ve been following the discussions the past couple days and want to thank you for your feedback as well as your support. First off, we want to say we’re sorry to those of you who didn’t have the experience you wanted, and we’d like to share our plans for what’s coming next.

There were a few hours during launch day where we experienced server-load issues that impacted players’ ability to jump right in, but we were able to resolve those later in the day. Separate from that, we’ve seen community feedback about different aspects of Reforged that we wanted to take some time to address.

Before we go on: the team is excited that Warcraft III: Reforged is finally upon us and we’re fully committed to supporting the game for a long time to come. The next few patches and updates we’ll discuss below are just part of our ongoing plans. This game is an integral part of the Blizzard DNA, with a team that loves Warcraft III, and we’re looking forward to pouring our hearts into Reforged and the Warcraft III community for the long term.

One of the concerns with Reforged that we’ve seen are the visuals when selecting Classic Mode. We’ve identified the bug causing the colors and shading to look different from the original Warcraft III, and we’re testing a fix that will be incorporated in a larger patch addressing this issue and others. We expect to release that late this week. The patch will also address many other known issues, such as fixing some portrait animations and audio bugs, implementing some UI fixes, and more. Please keep an eye out for the patch notes for a detailed list of all the bug fixes.

Another area of concern we’re seeing is regarding online features such as leaderboards and clans, which applies to all Warcraft III players, including those who haven’t purchased Reforged. At BlizzCon we talked a lot about how the team is actively working on standing up the back-end to ensure a smooth transition to this new MMR system, much like we did with StarCraft: Remastered. As with Remastered, these and other features will be included in a major patch for Reforged, which will also address the issue for players of the original game. We’ll share release plans as work progresses in the coming weeks—please be assured that the team is hard at work on standing these features up.

There are some individual concerns we’ve seen that we’re not currently planning to address and we wanted to give the community a heads-up. As of Version 1.30 of the original game, we saw very low usage of tournaments and of the Reign of Chaos ruleset, so we removed both in mid-2019 (in Version 1.31). Eliminating the maintenance for underused elements has helped us streamline our overall support of the game and focus on areas impacting the most players. That said, we do anticipate that players who prefer Reign of Chaos will find custom games with similar rulesets, which we hope will help satisfy that concern.

Related to that, as we talked about last year at BlizzCon, we did not want the in-game cutscenes to steer too far from the original game. We went a little deeper into the thought process behind that at the show, but the main takeaway is that the campaigns tell one of the classic stories in Warcraft history, and we want to preserve the true spirit of Warcraft III and allow players to relive these unforgettable moments as they were (albeit rebuilt with new animations and the higher fidelity art).

We know this update doesn’t address all questions, but we’re committed to the development and support of this game. We hope you’ll keep an eye out for this week’s patch and future updates and let us know what you think as we continue fine-tuning things. Until then, thank you as always for your support and passion for Warcraft III. We appreciate all your feedback and will continue to keep the Warcraft III community updated on everything we’re working on.

Sincerely,

The Warcraft III: Reforged Team

The response to that message is scathing, though, wow.
  • Apparently tournaments were on such a low usage level because they were riddled with bugs and hackers
  • There hadn't been any communication with the fanbase concerning those redone cutscenes for over a year. From what I can see in the responses here, most fans seemed to love the idea after seeing what it did for SC2. What no one cared to see, and what they did do, however, was "fixing" story elements to correspond with World of Warcraft lore.
  • They're still using the enhanced cutscene as trailer on the official site right now.

Banshee, sorry I did not notice this thread before, I was busy arguing there about Reforged
President of Blizzard (J. Allen Brack)
https://www.hiveworkshop.com/threads/blizzard-speaks-out-about-warcraft-3-reforged.322227/

Anthony Duplisea said:
[...] And then relatedly also on Warcraft, there's been some negative press on Warcraft 3 Reforge lately. Can you tell us what you're doing to address that? Thanks.

J. Allen Brack said:
[...] Concerning Warcraft III Reforged, honestly, it's been a bit of hurry. Our community has come to expect really amazing things from us, and we've heard from them that we did not achieve that bar. But we stand behind our games and have consistently shown that not only do we support them, but we continue to build on them even after launch. And we're committed to doing that here as well. And so we're going to continue to update the depth of the game and we'll continue to update the community with our plans going forward. Thanks for the question.

What he means is there will be patch after patch as they negotiate the needs of investors with players until they eventually get sick of doing so and move on to a new Warcraft game instead.

I have a better idea: *promise* patch after patch, but never actually doing anything. Keep investors happy, keep fans waiting and angry, then move on.
Win-win for everyone B-Lizzard deems important.
