COMMAND & CONQUER 3 - THE FULL STORY
Command & Conquer is one of the PC's most enduring and best loved strategy offerings and so when a single screen appeared a while ago proudly bearing a C&C3 logo, the 'Net went into overdrive.
Of course we saw and duly took note, but a single photo of placeholder screen on a widescreen TV does not a game make and the rather more prosaic truth behind that "genuine C&C3" screen has quickly emerged.
Don't even get slightly excited about seeing it, because EA immediately asked for the offending screen to be pulled and it duly was. Now EALA Game Design Director Adam Isgreen has gone on record to finally put the rumours to bed.
"What you saw was a concept/inspirational piece of art that we did over a year ago that displays on our internal EA monitors here at EALA. Concept art is our "What if?" avenue to explore things we may or may not want to do in the future with game content, a certain look, or atmosphere/tone. FYI, it's an image of a Scrin Primal defending against a GDI attack on a Scrin base. Obviously, the primal is winning. And yes, there are still a bunch of us ex-Westwood guys here."
Okay so that was a false alarm, but a C&C3 is a virtual no-brainer given that it's one of EA's best-selling and most popular franchises. It's understandable C&C fans' interest was piqued but rest assured, when the genuine announcement and images emerge, you'll see them here first. QUICK_EDIT
12:27 EA insiders have not only let slip that work is definitely underway on Command & Conquer 3 but have also divulged its full name - Command & Conquer 3: Tiberian Twilight - according to the latest reports bouncing around the 'Net.
Okay, so you might be tempted to file the question of whether there's going to be a third C&C instalment under 'tales of the bleeding obvious'- you may as well ask 'hey I wonder if there's going to be a FIFA 2006 next year?'.
However, the alleged new name is indeed a new detail and would seem plausible enough given its Tiberian Sun predecessor.
Treat this with all the caution it deserves though, as C&C 3 has some form in the rumour and speculation stakes. Remember the story behind that 'genuine C&C 3' screenshot that appeared earlier in June, only for it to be debunked by EA LA.
Unfortunately UK EA representatives were unavailable when we called to check this out, but we can almost guarantee there would be a "no comment" issuing from the depths of the publisher's Chertsey HQ. QUICK_EDIT
