Subject description: 4K OpenRA anyone?

Hello everyone! For those wondering about using C&C Remasters assets on OpenRA mods or standalone projects, CCHyper, Tore and pchote (a.k.a. Sleipnir), as members of the Community Council, has been trying to clarify this matter recently with the C&C Remastered Collection development team. Here's what he has to say about it:

CCHyper wrote:
Hey everyone, so there has been people asking about the C&C Remasters assets and using them in their open source standalone mods, as well as other sectors of the community asking questions along those lines (CNCNet, OpenRA etc).

The Community Council for the C&C Remasters have been discussing this topic with EA closely and EA have come up with a statement we can share with the community based on these questions;

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We (The Community Council) have discussed with EA directly the topic of using the C&C Remastered assets in community projects. EA reserves all rights to the C&C Remastered assets, but they do not object to community projects using the assets under the framework of the current Remastered Collection modding policy.

This means that in order to use the assets from the Remastered Collection these requirements must be met;
 - The user must have purchased the C&C Remastered Collection and have it installed through Steam or Origin.
 - The community project must be clear that it is a fanmade project and unaffiliated with EA.
 - The community project can in no way commercialize the usage of the assets.
 - The community project cannot redistribute the Remastered assets.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I, or any other member of the C&C Remasters Community Council will not be able to answer any more questions on this topic, but we hope this provides everyone with a clear understanding and correct use of the C&C Remasters assets.

- CCHyper

So, I guess that says all. CCHyper has stickied it in Assembly Armada's and, as relevant news, we are replicating it to the rest of the internet. For those who want an OpenRA using Remastered assets, you need to own the game and OpenRA would need to extract them straight from your C&C: Remastered Collection Steam or Origin installation. And that's it.

Seems fair, kinda expected this would be the road to take.

No word on using the Remastered assets for RA2/YR mods? They can't be standalone, not yet at least, since they're not freeware. Though you could argue that XWIS' version is free...

"The community project cannot redistribute the Remastered assets."
Fat chance of that happening unless someone manages a fool-proof way of encrypting MIXs in such a way only the game and the mod creator can extract/read them...

It works in the same way, TAK02, although you would need some tool to convert these assets to SHP (TS) file format, since you can't distribute them and they are TGA files inside .MEG files. They want you to buy the Remastered games. It is that simple.

Well, YR mods that use the XNA CnCNet client need some original files from the YR installation for running.

This is the same:
My mod XXXXXXX needs (or contains) C&C Remaster assets so install the Remaster game and then I'll let you run the mod, or pick yourself some files I'll request you from the Remaster installation to finish the mod setup. Later you can uninstall Remaster if you want save lots of GB from your hard disk.

Yes, but many seem to forget that XWIS' installation, which, again, you can get for free, works with the CnCNet client without problems.

Which is why I asked. Currently, XWIS can run any mod as long as it doesn't need Ares, and that is simply because AlexB made sure Ares was only injected into a couple of EXEs rather than inject into anything named gamemd.exe so he wouldn't chase "Ares-bugs" that resulted from faulty YR EXEs or other.

Fair enough.

The spirit of the announcement is that EA is okay with community projects using the assets if the player has bought them, but it is not okay with community projects sharing them. So you are probably* okay if your RA2 mod has a script/installer that converts the tga files to shp when the player installs it, but you are definitely not okay to upload those shp files to ppm or include them inside your mod installer.

*Disclaimer: I'm not an EA lawyer, so don't blame me if a black helicopter full of copyright police storm your house in the middle of the night.

No such thing. If the game can read it, then so can users.
