Hi, im new to ra2 modding Smile  I wanna change Radar images of 3 factions of YR, is it possible to do this without Ares? If it's no and it has to be using Ares or patching, can I use the custom sidebars while playing with other players online?

It is possible but too difficult. (Witout Ares, of course...)

1.) You have to use all the shp file names,

pal file names  (for each shp, same front name...)

in the  Side.mixes

2.) When you develop them. in order to make your own side.mix, you can use xcc mix editor...

3.) In vanilla YR;    YuriCountry ,I mean the third side uses same files of side02.mix, soviets.... but different radar shp files , pals ,including the names of them...

side02.mix and side02md.mixes are different than each other...

That's what I mean.. Maybe the others can explain much better than me ! Please forgive me since I am a terrible modder..

Your second question is simply NO, since all of the  game files  must be same in order to make a nice network...

You only need to use Ares if you want to add a completely new side with a new custom made sidebar. If you only want to change the radar animation of the sides already in the game then you dont need Ares.

The shp files used for the sidebar's graphics can be found within side01.mix (Allied), side02.mix (Soviet) & side02md.mix (Yuri). The file for the radar animation is aptly named radar.shp #Tongue

To edit the sidebars you'll need to extract copies of side01.mix, side02.mix & side02md.mix into the main Red Alert 2 folder using XCC Mixer. Then extract the radar SHP files from them using XCC Mixer, you can then edit them with SHP Builder. Once done put the edited files back into the copies of side01.mix, side02.mix & side02md.mix & play the game.

You can change any of the game's graphics & still be able to play online. It's only if you change any of the code within the ini files then you will get connection errors.
