You should consider adding a clickable viewport diagram to select the major faces, or a split view similar to most CAD or 3DS. With free-rotate it will be easy to lose track of which is which or even a general direction.

Also I might suggest adding an advanced normals editing view whereby the user could set thresholds for feature complexity, with a framework mode that would let you move some points around manually in a mesh, so as to fix unnecessary stepping or reduce influence at sharp differences.

There is a split screen option - the ui is fully customizable and the panels can be moved almost anywhere and re-grouped

with clickable viewport diagram, do you mean the cube as shown in the upper left corner of each viewport?

Kinda, what I'm suggesting is that there be a master you can click to jump to the view in free mode. 3DSMAX has the cube with the ring around it, but I don't have it installed to show you. Solidworks is similar but it overlays on the whole display when you choose the menu.

I envision something like this but smaller, in one of the corners. Notice that you can select the main axis faces, but also the inbetweens.

Sorry, i am still not entirely sure what you mean, the cube is actually clickable on the edges or the faces and it will rotate the camera to that particular view. But i might still not follow what you exactly meant.
