[UNITTYPE]
TechLevel=-1
CrateGoodie=yes

will make the unit only available from crates.

If you want a crate to cause an explosion that spreads radiation, you can enable one of the unused powerups in the [Powerups] section that supports an Animation, then use the Animation to cause damage.

Ares allows you to use a Weapon for the animation damage, so Radiation and other characteristics can also be added.

In SE I have a lot of crategoodie-only units no one can build, it's not a special function. I might even go as far as saying crategoodies should be all non-player units for the sake of diversity, but I also allow house-specific units to be as well.

There's already 2 different exploding crates, I'm sure you could make one nuclear.

as an example, for exploding crates:

[Powerups]
Explosion=5,CRIVEXP,yes,666

and for units, silverwind has already described it very well.

The 2 existing explosion powerups have some annoyances.

They are hardcoded to use the Warheads from C4Warhead= and FlameDamage=, both of which are used for other things.

Additionally, the explosions only actually damage the original receiver. You might find a group of infantry walking into a crate with only 1 being damaged. Using animation lets you walk around these limitations.

I think the exploding crates are disabled by default in their probabilities for RA2, but they were used in TS
