Here's Saberhawk words on it:

"Introducing the FIRST tool that'll prevent leechers from stealing mod assets. This tool takes a .mix file and edits it in such a way that makes XCC not see it as a valid mix file, but lets TS/FS/RA2/YR read it with no problems at all. Just select the input mix in the first selector screen and a new file to write to with a different name in the second screen. It gets to work and gives you the perfect leech-resistant mix file. Also, there is no way to unencode the mix, so be sure you have a backup!

LeechKiller 1.0

PS: This is an alpha product. It may kill your dog, steal your bike, key your car, and whatnot. I take no responsibility for damages caused by this product.

It sounds rather interesting. So XCC Mixer and Mix Editor both can't read the mix file?

That's the point, now isn't it? No XCC tool can read the mix file. It's in the code. Very Happy

Would it be possible to evetually create password-protected mix files so the file may be unencrypted, but only after a password is given?

Yes, it requires .NET Framework. Heavy download, but yes, it will be necessary for all Saberhawk's programs Smile And you should have the framework anyway, as more and more programs require it. (Heck, it's included in Win 2k3 installation, that's a big hint how important in is.)

Btw, I've edited the news. Quotes doesn't do good with this news script and yea, for some reason, it doesn't show the year. I'll take a look at this year issue. Thanks for spotting it.

No. It's a bad idee and a good one too. The bad part: you cant use ppl's work and fix their mods's bugs. The good part: Copyright Protection.

i dont want people fixing the bugs in my mod without my permission, if you wanted someone to do that you could just give them a non protected version.

If you want that, it'll have to be an 8 byte password generated by the program. :-/

Even if someone finds out what gets edited in the header, the XCC LMD still is stripped, so XCC wouldn't be able to get the name database for the files.

WTF? Your pc can blow up; The cd where you put your mod can breake; The server where you uploaded the mod is down for good; Hackers; Spyware; Viruses; etc.

Whatever, that's why you make multiple copies. Besides, what you wrote bove is all preventable and correctable errors. I love the idea, but I think it should be able to use a password, that way you can just give the password to people working on the mod/beta testers.

That would have been a good idea. Passworded mixes. For now, we can archive the mixes and give a password to the archive.

As for password protect mixes, it would be impossible to do with XCC's current arcitecture. With another little tool I'm working on, MixSpy, you can apply passwords to mix files, but password protected mixs function the same as these encoded mix files. XCC can't read them properly.

A password protected mix that can be opened up by MixSpy, my version of XCC Mix Editor. It won't be able to be opened up by XCC products or the password protection would be useless. #Tongue

Yes. .NET framework is required. Kinda dumb, you say? Longhorn is programmed mostly in the .NET framework. Server 2003 comes with the framework. With the fraework, my tools run FAST on Windows, OSX, Linux, and even UNIX. It's not dumb, it's smart.

Thought I should mention, all 3 computers in 3 states that had the data for my mod-in-progress all had data loss in some way. Mine had an incident relating to Diet Coke, another was a faulty hard drive mechanical component, another was just good old fashioned random corruption.

Shit happens. We've managed to get 90% of our stuff back at least, but if you're a one-man mod team and your drive dies while the mod's in progress, you might want to get your released beta's mix back open.

Im totally against this, Its absolutely idiotic in my opinion. Dont we all bitch and moan about how EA are such bastards not to release the TS source code? Dont we all want TS to be open source? Yet we are hypocritical and petty enough to want to close our own mods... or your own mods as Im sure Ackron would have a comment about that. Its stupid and rather pathetic, I mean.. ITS MODS for crying out loudd.

ackron the mighty wrote:

LMMFAO!  And just what the hell have all the high quality TS mods been doing to Tiberian Sun Ackron? Hmmm? Mods like TS 3.0 have been made which aim specifically to address such a thing in the original TS. Yet your going to sit there and bitch and moan about someone doing ti to YOUR mod?

Absolutely shocking people, I am appaled, I though you all were a hell of a lot better than this, more wise. Well all apart from Ackron, I know what hes like, tis his way, but the rest... I expected more form you.

Unlike EA, if you contact a modder and request to use voxel X in project Y, the modder will probably say yes (even if there are certain conditions).

Unlike EA, if you contact a modder and request to know how to do a certain bit of ini magic, the modder will probably at the very least drop hints and point you the right way.

EA operates with closed-source and sealed-lips, on the other hand. Don't compare humans to the machine.

Sorry Sk8erkid, I know my post was somewhat bitchy, I should of worded it differently. Its just

1- This program really annoys me in light of all we want from EA, we should keep the community OPEN SOURCE, for the benefit of all. So what if some n00b steals mod assets and puts them in a lame ass mod? The community will recognise it, it will be known, people will still download the real deal, the high quality mods, always. It allows people to learn the ropes, keep quality high, learn new things, ways of doing things.

2- Ackrons ways have been irritating me highly and I couldnt help myself, Im sorry.

I just cannot stress how highly I am against this, I hope people recognise my reasoning behind this, and hopefully... WONT use this program.

Nothing's stopping you from anti-leeching your music data and keeping the rest open source though. You can pick and choose what you keep locked and what you keep open.

Most of you are missing one point: this program will only stop n00bs. Which is definitely a good thing.

Explanation:
(For those linux-familiar people: The mix files only tar the contents, they do not gzip them. Ergo: ) Anyone with a hexeditor, standard win calculator and enough brains can still get the stuff out.

However, I doubt many people will attempt to do that. I certainly wouldn't bother trying. I'd just ask the mod creator instead.

Anyone with a tool that isn't anal about the byte sizes can get it out. Heck, if EA made TS open source, then anyone can get the mixs open.

Nah don't worry Alex, I'm going to use this program soon enough anyway, it'd be handy for the link to be re-ressurected Smile

If it stop n00bs from ripping my mods and placing them in "My NuKe MoD" then it deserves a 10/10. They should make their own stuff. How would people like Gangster feel if all of his Exodus buildings was ripped and "PuT InTo RA2 W/ NAZIs VS TEH ALIENs!11"

I wonder if Banshee, Clazzy (or other members) still have it in case the link is forever dead and they can re-host it on PPM.

What the fack do you mean? I don't want my hard work ripped and under threat of being claimed under noobism with them saying it's all their own work when it's actually mine. I also don't want to see my hard work, and anyone elses fall under the NUKE MOD category. I'll say this:

If you want FREE SOURCE voxels and shps go to the Media Hut and use the voxels and shps that people have given there for free in that place. It's an area that people don't really care if their voxels are modified/changed and after a quick search a lot of high quality voxels can also be found there.

Thanks Carni Smile

So it's wrong to protect hours worth of work on SHPs and voxels just for some kid to steal them?
It's a free choice on behalf of the mod owner to protect his work - it's not like the mod will stop working, hell the protection is insanely easy to overcome. It does however stop morons from stealing your work for their shitty half arse mods with 'uber monkeys of doom' in them.
If someone wants their work public they will make it public. Take the fact I released everything I had been working on for Tiberian Sun: Grace to the public domain. Those models took up quite a deal of my time - I chose to release them as I personally had no use for them. However, should I have finished the mod I would certainly have protected myself against theft. I would however allow some individuals to use my resources if they actually asked.
It's not like this stops you playing the game - it stops you ripping off the authors work.

You want complete sources from mods? Go ahead and crack the relatively weak protection added. Just don't go telling people you're doing it or steal the work in it's original form.

Uh huh, cos its real easy to learn to voxel when you just use someone else's.
