ViPr has released a new version from 3ds2vxl tool. Here's the changelist:

"Doom3 model loading has been added but it's really buggy (see readme) I'm hoping people will notice and help me. Loads of other little bugs have been fixed. An option has been added because voxels tended to come out looking too bright. TGA files now do not need to be 24bit, they can be 32bit or 8bit greyscale also."

This tool is the best option from 3d modellers who want to turn their work into voxels. You can download it at ViPr's site.

it works fine on my Windows XP. i think probably it's just the viewer that is a bit dodgy because it crashes for me when i have other programs running at the same time sometimes. you can disable the viewer and just use the voxelizer part of the program. anyway if the viewer crashes, the vxl should still be done because the viewer doesn't initiate until voxelization has completed.

i once did see that someone converted a Renegade vehicle to 3ds format so that my program could voxelize it. i do not remember who did it or how but it is possible but i expect it to be somewhat tricky.

@ViPr: I disabled the viewer. The command promt is closed by Windows. The same happens with the old version. On Win98, I didnt try it, yet.

yrarg.cncguild.net They're for RA2, but look more like ts vxls if you ask me.

Yeah, but the details are too weak, so they're good for ts. The Hum-Vee is perfect for ts, same for the A10.

No. I said some exceptions. The Hum-Vee and the A10 from that pack are too small for ra2.

Havoc, maybe there is something wrong with the 3ds file.

and about Daz's Renegade converted voxels. i think he did those ages ago before i had unscrambled normals and before supersampling so if you can figure out how to get them to 3ds format and revoxelize them you might get nicer results. plus you can change their size to almost whatever you want. besides it might be interesting to find out if you can convert General's models. are they the same format as Renegade models?

Yes. Both are w3ds. There is nothing wrong with the 3ds file. I tried with all the 3ds files that I have and now I saw something. If I directly open the prompt, it crashes. Maybe WinXP SP2 is causing trouble.....

It works. It seems that the 3ds file is messed up.

Impresive, that'd I say about this app. Still there is a problem. After I convert 3ds to voxels, the voxels wont appear on HVA Builder and Voxel Viewer. All I see is voxel (not the model, ONE voxel, pixel, whatever). In Voxel Section Editor it works fine. Help?

Havoc, that looks like an extremely large vxl. some viewers might have trouble loading such huge vxls into memory. btw also i think for people that have low RAM you cannot voxelize at too high a resolution coz it just takes too much memory to voxelize. i use stucuk's voxel viewer and it seems to work ok with every vxl that my program produces.

there are a couple of things i asked him to fix but i don't know if he did. one is that the voxel cubes overlap unless you make the distance 1 between them (but then gaps will appear in game coz it should be around 0.7). the other problem is that any remap color is displayed as if it's the brightest shade.

Christophski. i believe this is what i call the mesh misplacement bug in my program. you cannot move the pivots independantly or use mirroring because that will cause meshes to be positioned incorrectly by my program. if you moved the pivots then just highlight all the meshes and hit the reset pivot button. if you absolutely must have a pivot in a certain place then i recommend that instead of moving just the pivot, you move the whole mesh and then move all the mesh's vertices the opposite way. if you mirrored a mesh then just attach the mirrored mesh to the unmirrored original. let me know if that solves the problem.

btw, Havoc, on that buggy i can kind of see that there will be the problem of thin objects having opposing sides occupying the same voxel grid location and confusing my program which will try to mix the surfaces together. i can't think of a good way to solve this.

btw i want everyone to be using high quality voxelization all the time and i'm thinking of removing that option in future because it's making my code look really messy and hard to debug. i only left it in so that incase there's a bug i can switch the mode and see if the bug is still there so i can maybe narrow-down what the cause is.

@VIPr. The buggy is truly huge (x=200 #Tongue), but I chose it randomly from a site and converted it. I put the distance 1 instead of 0,7 cuz I thought it would make some errors. About the RAM, the pc worked fine when I voxelized the model (it's at hi-q too), the same when I opened it in VXLSE3.

I doesn't work.

I open the file and attempt to install the program, and the message "SDL.dll not found." pops up.

Is there a version that works? I would really like to use it.

EDIT: Sorry, I know it was a MAJOR bump.

Yes indeed that should be pinned.

Thank you IcySon55! I'll take a look at it tonight. (I've already downloaded it.)
