I've been experimenting with some rather long IDs for some objects, mostly warheads so far, and there seems to be an upper limit above which the game will simply not read the characteristics of the warhead. It will not crash as it would with a missing warhead statement on a weapon, but it will simply not consider the characteristics of the warhead.

What is the upper limit of letters in an ID? And does it just apply to warheads or to other objects too? And how about filenames?

In TI we tried to keep IDs as short as possible
for SHPs and terrain TMP files we followed the 8.3 filenames (like in good old DOS)

Internal IDs can be a bit longer than 8 chars, but we try to keep them there as short as possible too.

And most importantly, do not use any special characters like space.
Things like
[My super duper Tank]
is a sure way to create unexpected Internal Errors.


But the max length of IDs, can tell you only one of the exe pros.

Not sure how accurate this is, but it seems 23 characters + 1 null terminator.

Are you referring to the length or the amount of uppercase letters?
If the latter; no limit, game looks for "GACNST" and expects a section with ID "[GACNST]" exists, simple.
If the former, I think it's what I quoted here.
