Chapter 1 - A brave new world

By his reckoning it had been about 35 years since the first Tiberium war, he couldn't be sure though. Markus shifted uncomfortably on his stool, he couldn't remember the last time he saw the sky and felt the warmth of the sun stroke at his flesh. It had been winter ever since the GDI space station crashed to Earth, the Nod Tiberium missiles had made short work of it, and the resulting atmospheric fallout buried it under miles of dirt and tiberium waste. The Tiberium that had been released into the atmosphere didn't take long to grab on, if the crash was day 0, by the end of day 1 the sky had turned a deep green colour, at day 2 it started raining liquid Tiberium, if you weren't underground or inside you were dead or as good as. Day 3 saw an end to the rain and the start of the Tiberium winter, the temperature rose rapidly and it began to snow green snow. He stood and peered out of the window, the planet was so different now, the ground was littered with green crystals interspersed with patch's of blue crystals, where mighty trees had once stood, now stood ugly, writhing monuments. A thick green fog clung round the roots of these monstrosities, the fog was a reasonably new occurance, it was not a gas but rather a large swarm of microscopic tiberium lifeforms that fed on the minerals leeched up from the ground by the deformed trees. They were extremely dangerous to humans, having a tendency to quickly get into the lung tissue and poison you, luckily though they tended not to leave the sanctuary of the tree roots unless disturbed. He turned his back on the world outside, sighed wearily, and sat back down, he waited for his captor to return.

Chapter 2 - A roaring trade

Markus awoke some time later to the sound of footsteps outside the cell and the loud creak as the door next to him opened. In the doorway stood a dark figure clad in a black uniform with the familiar blood red trim of a Nod officers uniform. Markus knew this man, his name was Master Brother Ludovic and he was in charge of this desolate wasteland. “Stand!” Ludovic bellowed, Markus did, “Follow Me”, Markus obeyed, he always obeyed, he had no choice. Ludovic strode briskly down the corridor, Markus tried to keep up shuffling awkwardly behind him, after many twists and turns they came to a large grey door, unmarked except for the dark red scorpion iconography at head height. Ludovic swung the door open and marched inside, turning and fixing Markus with a dark stare.
As he entered the room Markus noticed two figures standing across from him facing the wall, they wore long cloaks that were stained with mud and tiberium. As if they knew he was watching them they turned and looked directly at him and it was then he recognised them as mutants, the dim green glow coming from under the hood of the cloak was a big give-away. They stood silently in front of him, looking him up and down, and then again. The largest of the two mutants turned to Ludovic and reached inside his cloak, he pulled out a large bag of credits and handed them to Ludovic. Ludovic opened the bag, glanced inside, nodded to the mutant figure and then turned and left the room. It was only then that it clicked, he was being sold as a slave to the local mutants. His good health and lack of tiberium poisoning made him the perfect worker and Nod had discovered a roaring trade in selling captured soldiers as slaves. The large mutant grabbed his arm and led him out of the door and down the hallway. A Nod guard opened a large door that led out onto a large courtyard, protected from the spreading tiberium by the huge dome that covered it. Markus walked across the courtyard, the mutant tightly gripping his upper arm, and out into the wastelands.

Chapter 3 - Home sweet home

Markus was led by the mutants through the barren wilderness for nearly two days, he was weary and was beginning to have difficulty breathing, the thick green was air bitter to the taste and clogged his throat with it's noxious fumes. He knew if he didn't get inside soon he wouldn't make it. When he served in the GDI he had seen all to often the effects tiberium had on the body, he had lost many men that way. The coroners reports always listed them as 'death by natural causes'. Tiberium was no more natural now than cancer had been in the 21st century, but so many had died it had become easier to just burn the body and sign the forms, autopsies were rarely performed, reserved only for those who had met truly creative ends at the hands of Nod's latest weapons. His mind began to wander as he recalled the weird mutations he had seen whilst stationed at City 11 and sub-consciously he stopped walking. A sharp pain between his shoulder blades brought him swiftly back to reality, the mutant hit him again with the butt of his rifle before Markus could scramble to his feet and continue onwards. He had no idea where they were or where they were going, everywhere looked the same these days in the scorched wastelands of Eastern Europe, though the continent no longer carried that name. Another day passed before they reached their destination, a small camp in the middle of no-mans land. It was a selection of pre-fabricated buildings and wooden huts surrounded by a tall wooden wall. Wood was the preference for defensive structures these days because the veins that littered these lands seemed to have no appetite for it. The largest of the mutants, the one who had paid for him back at the Nod base shouted something up to the top of the wall in a tongue that he didn't recognise or understand. The walls creaked loudly and slowly opened inwards to reveal the rest of the camp. A small signpost nailed to the wall by the gates read “Waystation Vestfold”. He guessed this would be his home for a little while.

Chapter 4 - A friendly welcome

Markus was led to a nearby pre-fab and taken inside. The large mutant turned and left the room whilst the smaller mutant moved in front of the doorway as the heavy door swung shut with a dull thud. Following a long pause the mutant raised his hand to his hood and drew it back over his head. Markus did not move, he wasn't shocked by what he saw, he had seen it many times before. The mutant was devoid of any hair on his head, in it's place was a light covering of small green crystals, his eyebrows too were green and crystalised and a single green crystal, about 3 centimetres long, protruded from just under his chin. It wasn't uncommon, in it's early stages, for tiberium to take hold in a human being and completely replace all hair on the body, in fact he had heard that in some mutant tribes the loss of hair and gain of tiberium was hailed as a coming of age for the affected man or woman. One of the mutants eyes was a deep blue, the other a bright green, Markus wasn't sure if this represented mutation from both strains of tiberium or if the single strain had so far failed to reach the other eye. As the mutant removed the cloak and hung it on the wall Markus noticed the crystals protruding from the back of the hands and the fore-arms, they were rougher looking than the other crystals on his body and looked as though they had been sharpened. The mutant stretched out one arm and motioned to a chair in the centre of the room, Markus moved slowly to it and sat down and the mutant began to talk, in English. Markus was visibly surprised, and the mutant obviously noticed as he paused just long enough for Markus to regain his composure. “Welcome to waystation Vestfold” he said with a slight accent that Markus did not recognise. “You have been brought here against your will and for that we apologise. You will learn why soon enough” continued the mutant. “I am Halvard and for the time being this is your home, you must get some sleep now for you have a long journey ahead.” And with that he turned and left, Markus heard the familiar hiss as the door sealed him in. “Sorry my ass” he said to himself.
