Playing all C&C games on Vista
I have been reading many posts from ppl who can't play all C&C games on Vista. That's odd, because I can. So I will share my way of playing the games with y'all.
What do you need:
-Original TS/FS
-Original RA2/YR
-Original Generals/ZH
-TFD
I know, it may look rather odd, but from TS and newer, you can use the original games instead of TFD. For TD and RA1 your need TFD, because neither XP nor Vista can run those original cd's.
What do you need to do in compability mode for what game:
-TD (TFD): Comp mode Win 95, resolution of 640x480, admin mode*
-RA1 (TFD): Comp mode Win 95, resolution of 640x480, admin mode
-TS/FS (original): Comp mode Win 98/Me, admin mode
-RA2/YR (original): Comp mode Win 98/Me**
-Generals/ZH (original): Nothing special required, works OK
I didn't mention TW, but that game can run on Vista any way, because it was created for XP/Vista...
Notes:
*=maybe it's just my TFD, but I need the original TD disk to run TD. This was with my XP computer too, so this may be a TFD problem.
**=you don't need to have this comp mode, but it does improve the gameplay when used.
If you have a better way to play all C&C games, please tell me, and I will change this post...
I hope this will help you to play all C&C games on Vista. Happy gaming!
UPDATE: tested Generals, see list above for results...
P.S.: I dunno if this is in the right forum. If it's wrong, can one of the mods move it plz Last edited by Dutchygamer on Fri Dec 28, 2007 10:55 am; edited 1 time in total QUICK_EDIT
Same in Britain, but i'd never buy a premade PC so It's not a problem for me
I tried to install Windows Live Messenger on a Vista laptop yesterday:
On XP - Download .exe, run .exe, job done.
On Vista - Download .exe, run .exe, yes I'm sure I want to run this .exe, yes you have permission to run this .exe, no I don't want to install all these other Windows Live things, wait for 20 minutes while it "Searches for other installed Windows Live components" (why?), sorry you can't install Windows Live Messenger.
I wish I was exaggerating. _________________ QUICK_EDIT

you fail at vista. ever tried disabling UAC? _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
It wasn't my PC and I didn't expect anyone to have made such a retarded operating system that it couldn't just run an installation for one of the company's own sodding programs without having to arse around with it. _________________ QUICK_EDIT

My mum's Vista extracts files from archives and copies/moves from external drives at about 60KB/s as opposed to the several megabytes per second it should do. Copyinga 1MB file takes around 30 seconds. It now takes two minutes to boot (getting progressively slower with each passing week) and no matter what services or applications I remove, there's no solution. Oh, and don't get me started on the stupid memory usage both dwm.exe and explorer.exe use when IDLING (combined they used 150MB of RAM). Thankfully, being able to turn off UAC makes the torturous rape that is Windows Vista slightly less awful. If you installed it for DX10 then let me tell you that Crysis running on XP still looks fantastic, as does Bioshock. End of story. _________________

That could be memory related, Vista doubles the RAM requirement for most games so I imagine it does for everything else. _________________ QUICK_EDIT

well, then maybe i got a copy made by God instead of MS, as i dont have said problems. apart from it being a RAM hog. _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT

Well it's got a gig of RAM, considering my current XP installation idles at 133MB of RAM (and I have 2GB of the stuff, I'm not miserly because I'm limited for it) it's pretty pathetic that an OS sucks up so much memory. I still can't find a good reason for using it yet, the improved multicore/hyperthreading isn't a reason when the rest of the OS is so slow as it is.
EDIT: And I forgot to mention that 50% of the time internet connection sharing and/or DHCP just refuses to work. There's no reason why it doesn't work and no apparent fix (it'll start working of its own accord) so if you're another computer on the network, have fun downloading. _________________

Vista for me is an upgrade. I got an XP that had a bug that caused explorer.exe to use 99% of the cpu. So a few mb of ram is nothing in comparison to the drudging pace of my xp (with 2gigs of ram). I got 3 gigs of ram with my vista, and when I start up a program it is instant.
The should be an OS based on XCC mixer lol, or alteast someone should make it so you can launch .EXEs from it.
Judging from EA's recent releases, there shall be another pack that is VISTA exclusive. _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
Yes, I have Vista.
Yes, I know I will burn in hell for this.
No, I don't any any other choice.
On my PC I run XP SP2 - no problems there, runs perfectly.
On my Laptop I have Linux and Vista - the reason I have vista is simple: At university I freqquantly have to sue the internet, however the wifi software on my laptop is only compatible with vista, so I'm stuck using it.
Sure, Vista runs TS/ RA 2 without problems, but the rest of the software....
MSN, notepad, word, and firefox are just some of the programs that refuse to work properly (or work at all). Mind you, I keep it nice and clean, with updates and virus scans.
My favorite Vista error message so far (This is real, I shit you not):
Could not establish connection. Windows will now attempt to look for solutions on the Internet.
I'll get a screenie next time I get this error. QUICK_EDIT
I installed ra1 onto my 98 computer and it worked fine. i upgraded to 2000 and it started f*cking around, as well the sound not working. On the box, it goes on about the "Compatibility Mode" but when i view the properties, the compatibility tab doesn't exist! Neither did it on XP home and Pro.
But thank goodness they brought out TFD QUICK_EDIT

Argh, ppl, please stay on topic. What do you think of my tutorial. This ain't a Vista vs all other OS discussion
@ IcySon55: I've tried it on my pc, and it doesn't start the installation progress (both on my Vista and XP pc's). Maybe it's my RA1 cd's that are bad QUICK_EDIT
You have to use compatibility mode on one of the .exe files on the disc.
The only one that doesn't work properly on XP is the DOS version of C&C, but you can run that with DOSBox or something like that (why you'd need to when C&CGold was released for free I don't know). _________________ QUICK_EDIT

I made this for ppl (like me) who both own the original games and TFD, and don't want to do diffcult with additional programms to get there games running on Vista... That's all QUICK_EDIT

As I said, when I put the original TD/RA1 cd's in my pc, it doesn't start installing, nor will it install when i run the installer from the cd. So I thought that nobody could, so I made this tutorial QUICK_EDIT
Let me quote this because it seems to have missed your eyes. (I'll edit it for clarity.)

When the installer doesn't run, it gives you bullshit about not working on Windows NT. So compatibility mode on the installer will correct that problem. Even in Vista. So edit the bullshit out of your tutorial because it's just WRONG. QUICK_EDIT
