Kane's Wrath mod SDK campaign and its consequences.
Subject description: Our dreams of modding the global conquest mode are just dreams? Hard to answer...
Almost a month ago, we've announced a community campaign to make EALA release a mod SDK to Kane's Wrath. We did a lot of things before that. We've gathered a group of modders and webmasters interested on it, contacted the developpers personally to ask about the possibility of creating a mod SDK and what would they need to convince them. We've gathered public feedback with polls at many sites and a topic at the main Kane's Wrath forum. And I'd like to thank for all the support we've got for it.
Earlier in this month, we've sent an email with our conclusions to Command & Conquer's official spokesman, Mr. Aaron "APOC" Kaufman about this. We've got two responses in few days. One we couldn't reveal and another one I've posted at EA forums and I'm quoting below:
Quote:
“We’ve never ruled out the possibility of creating a Kane’s Wrath Mod SDK, but it’s also been one of those tools that we haven’t had the ability to focus on with respect to our past development on Kane’s Wrath for XBOX 360 and completing development on Red Alert 3. Wherein we are creating a Live Team to help support such efforts as these in the future, that team is in its absolute infancy right now and not at a production level stage yet. You’ll see that team come together over a longer period time as Mike Verdu alluded to in his recent blog.”
“Creating the Kane’s Wrath Mod SDK unfortunately isn’t as simple as transferring code over from the C&C 3 Mod SDK, but the work we did for the C&C 3 Mod SDK absolutely clears a lot of the effort to create an SDK for Kane’s Wrath, as well as Red Alert 3. It’s amazing to see the passion from the C&C community with this petition and the threads, and it doesn’t surprise me at all given how creative this community is. It also shows a lot of respect and admiration for Kane’s Wrath and the desire to create. At this time, our official EALA Mod “guru” Mastermind and I are researching the possibility of creating the SDK for Kane’s Wrath with our development team, but we cannot make any guarantee or promise of this happening. The team is driving to complete Red Alert 3. We are committed to creating a Mod SDK for Red Alert 3 and we fully realize the need for one for Kane’s Wrath to open the door to many mod possibilities as well, and we will make every effort to see what we can do. I’d like to see all the C&C 3 mods in production flourish, but I agree that seeing many arise for Kane’s Wrath would be fantastic. I understand this isn’t the most positive news, but when I have more confident info on whether we will be able to steer this through…or not, I will let you know as soon as possible.”
The response wasn't the most pleasant for us, fans, which is not a surprise. I was actually happy that, at least, they were interested on creating Kane's Wrath mod SDK and they actually took some time to check if it was viable or not. But they did the same thing to the Generals Ladder Kit, The First Decade 1.03 patch, C&C Tiberium Wars Patch 1.10 and others that have never seen the light of the day.
The Live Team he mentioned in his response, which will be the team of people that will be responsible for patching their games, is being setup since late june or early july. They were still being setup by the time I've got that response (august 6th) and they still have to hire programmers for it, once it is setup, before it gets in action. If you are a good observer, Red Alert 3 will be released at the 'red october', which is getting close. It won't surprise me if this team becomes overloaded with patches for Red Alert 3 once they launch.
If this Live Team start working after the release of Red Alert 3, it will take many months to see a patch for Kane's Wrath, if they actually work on it. The mod SDK doesn't take that much to be done, but it requires a patch to be released. And I'm sure there is a large part of the community screaming for a nerf on the corrupter, to reduce rushes with devourer healed by corrupters or Hexapod healed by corrupters and teleported by Mastermind/Prodigy.
What do you think of this whole thing? Or do you have any doubts? Feel free to discuss it here and remember, you do not need to register to reply to this topic. QUICK_EDIT

If they don't make a KW Mod SDK before RA3 is released, I may hope they include a fully functional one with the shipped RA3 (including tools to extract everything from the game instead of seperate files and a World Builder which ain't a CPU whore )... QUICK_EDIT
Without a timeline on a KW Mod SDK (e.g. probably not in 2008), I'm not sure if it would still be relevant when it is released. Updates to the C&C3 Mod SDK might be more relevant (I'm sure the RA3 one will have some new tricks, and updating the C&C3 one to match would be cool). But this is all speculative. _________________ TibEd 2 for C&C3 experimental QUICK_EDIT
