Before I begin the story, I have to say that all military units in this story are actually used by the militaries in their respective countries today. I did a lot of research for this story (i.e. I browsed Wikipedia while listening to my playlist) The only fictional units are the MST and the Flash Fighters, which I couldn't find a real military unit for. If any knows an a ship analogous to the MST I described, please tell me. Also, I should probably explain the acronyms and references, so the story makes more sense...

Akula Class- Akula meaning "shark", a Russian class of submarines that began production as early as the beginning of the Cold War

LCAC- Landing Craft, Air Cushion; looks similar to the Hovercraft in RA2

NATO- North Atlantic Treaty Organization

RIM-161-N/A(for some reason this acronym wasn't explained)

SM-3- Standard Missile 3; 3 meaning the third generation of this type of missile

Type 53 torpedoes- name for the 53cm torpedoes often used by submarines

RQ-4- R=Department of Defense Q= Unmanned Aircraft System (I didn't make the acronym) 4= 4th series of this type of aircraft Purpose= reconnassaince

BTW- That is the true format used when relaying a distress signal over the radio from a naval vessel

Off the coast of the Arctic Ocean

The Russian submarine Glasgow is patrolling the coast of the Arctic. Their objectives are simple: prevent ships of any nationality from landing on the Arctic mainland in their patrol zone. Russian scientists from their recently established base near the North Pole, Koltsov Station, recently found large amounts of oil trapped beneath the ice, fearing other nationalities might discover the oil reserves as well; a blockade was secretly formed to preserve the secret. Russia was now talking to NATO and other alliances to convince them to allow Russia to secure the territory without causing suspicion. The man leading the lurking Typhoon Akula Class submarine is a captain of the 1st rank, Boris Ivanov.
“Sir, radar is picking up a small American craft, it is the LCAC model. What do you want to do?” My Senior Lieutenant reported.
“Hmm… an American landing craft? I wonder what the Americans are doing over here. Let’s see what it does, but load torpedoes as a precaution.”
“Yes sir.”
“Approximately how far away is it from the shore?” I inquired.
“Last I checked, about 15 kilometers away.”
“Do you think we should communicate with them using the radio?”
“We aren’t allowed to give away our position.”
“What is the safety zone for them?”
“At 2 kilometers away, fire at will.”
“Yes sir.”
“Raise periscope.” I demanded as I got up and walked towards the instrument.
I peered in through the oculus of the periscope and the stormy surface of the steel-cold ocean. I was looking for the larger primary ship that released the smaller craft. It couldn’t be too far away, LCACs aren’t meant to be in extreme cold for more than just a few hours, and seeing as the crew isn’t protected from the elements, they would last even less time. I spotted the steel hull of an American MST a few hundred meters away. That’s good, I thought. MST’s were a recent innovation for transporting military vessels in the interior docking station of a low-lying bulletproof miniature “harbor” that could hold small ship, usually landing craft or a squad of Flash Fighters, a small scout/fire support/escort ship sporting a machine gun and small store of RIM-161 SM-3 missiles to be used as a counter to aircraft. Although the MST is defenseless against ballistics, it is usually far away from the danger zone and often accompanied with a destroyer or two for extra security. Unfortunately for this vessel, its deadlier cousins were far from it for it to be safe. I took in the name of the ship. The USS Calvin. I took down the periscope and sat back down.
“Fire at the MST first, so they don’t have a chance to send a message back to a military base.”
“Firing torpedoes.”
I waited as the two Type 53 torpedoes homed in on the stationery target. An explosive shockwave that shook the ship declared that the ship was now plunging into the icy depths.
“Sink the LCAC.”
“Yes sir.”
Two more were launched from the torpedo bay. Another shockwave.

“Sir, we received a distress signal from the USS Calvin.” Colonel Richardson reported.
“At what time?”
“At approximately 2230 hours, a distress signal sent from latitude 86° 32’ 67” N, 23° 43’ 52” E.”
“Were they able to send and type of message describing what happened?”
“If you come with me I can replay the message for you.”
“Okay.”
I followed the Colonel as he lead me through a series of halls, rooms, and finally in the radio control room.
“At 2234 hours the ship known as the USS Calvin relayed this message to us.” Richardson said as he pushed the play button. I listened as the radio came to life with an urgent message:
“Mayday, mayday, mayday!” The voice yelled.
“This is the USS Calvin; I repeat this is the USS Calvin! Position is 86° 32’ 67” N, 23° 43’ 52” E! We are hit! Something hit us! I repeat, we are hit! Need rescue! Torpedo! Help u--.”
After a long pause, I finally said:
“Do we have any reconnaissance planes?”
“We have an RQ-4, but it’s only for emergencies.”
“You heard that radio transmission, this is an emergency.”
“I’ll send it immediately.”
“What kind of ship is the USS Calvin?”
“I believe it is a Mobile Ship Transport.”
“Do you know what it was carrying?”
“I can find out.”
“Get back to me as soon as possible; I need to make a report on this and send it to the Pentagon.”
“Yes sir.”

“Madame, at 2234 hours, the USS Calvin was hit while escorting an LCAC in neutral territory to the Arctic for a land survey; last known position: 86° 32’ 67” N, 23° 43’ 52” E.” My lieutenant told me.
“Hit by what?” I asked.
“A torpedo, and when the area was investigated further, we found a Russian Typhoon submarine, Akula Class.”
“I’ll get Washington on the line.”

Brrrrrrrrrrriiiiiinnnnnnggggg, brrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiinnnnnngggg, brrrrrrriiiiiiii-
“Do you know what time it is?” I said as I rubbed my eyes. “It’s tomorrow.”
“Sorry to wake you, but this is an emergency, we have reason to believe a Russian submarine violated our Pact of Nonaggression by sinking one of our ships off the coast of the Arctic.”
“I’ll get Dmitry on the line.”
I hung up and walked into the Oval office. Grabbing the phone labeled “Russia”, I called up on the current Russian president Dmitry Medveddev.
“Barack Obama? Why are your calling me?”
“One of the U.S.’s naval vessels was torpedoed and sunk of the Arctic coast and one of your Typhoon submarines was found nearby, I need an explanation for this.”
“I can’t talk about this right now, goodbye.”
“If you hang up now, I will have to believe you have committed an open act of war against the United States.”
But before I finished, he was gone. I slammed the phone down and made a call to the Pentagon.
“Hello?”
“This is the president; alert NATO that the U.S. is now at war with Russia, I need forces to begin preparing for war.”

I like it so far, but two things:
The president doesn't really have a phone labeled "Russia" like he does in RA2 #Tongue

I think you should do at least one more incident before the U.S. would declare war on a country like Russia; It wouldn't be done so abruptly (and certainly not by a panzy like Obama #Tongue )

What the hell was that babble? Glasgow is the name of the ship, you know how naval vessels can be named after people, places or thing, this one is named after a Russian city
