Is there any chance the program can be changed to not include a FinalSun.ini in the main windows folder?
I hate it when programs litter their inis everywhere on the PC and don't keep their stuff in the folder where they are installed.

A new finalsun with some bugfixes would be nice too. Is there any newer version which has
-"no sound" option by default in the menu
-remap shown in the full color range (currently every single of the 16 remap colors is shown in the same brightness in FS). This is especially annoying in DTA with its full remap TD vehicles which become a single colored blob in FS
-"show building outline" slowdown bugfix
-an option to disable registry search for game files and default usage of the path in the local FinalSun.ini

Some of these things have been hacked into the exe, but often not in a very clean way or only one fix was done and not all.

I'd love to be able to disable the automatic "cleaning" of the map file when you save a map. FinalSun removes any comments from the map file and rearranges everything. Very annoying sometimes, especially in a map where you test things.

Make sure to note all changes to FinalSun, so they can be applied to FinalAlert 2 as well.
Shouldn't be too hard considering FinalSun is nearly equal to FinalAlert 2 Yuri's Revenge.

Did you take a look at http://ppmsite.com/forum/download.php?id=50568 ?
It's not really hacked into the exe, the ability to disable sounds with a button was present, the button itself just wasn't. Again, FS is nearly equal to FA2:YR (FinalSun even has -non visible - MindControl Decision in the Teams dialog: http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/2594/mcdb.png) so the changes could be 'easily' portable to FA2YR

It rewrites the data it loaded, it doesn't remove them, as it ignores the comments when reading, of course.

The end result is that it removes them as it overrides the map file without the comments. The solution would be to load the comments along with rest of the rules.ini lines and write them back in when saving, preferably in the order they were in so no reordering is done either.

i guess finalsun uses the KERNEL32.DLL functions GetPrivateProfileString and WritePrivateProfileString which are the functions used by windows too, to write and read ini files.
These however don't come with any functionality to read comments.
Thus it would be surely a lot of work to write completely new ini read/write functions which take care of comments.

comments are also tricky as it's not really clear to which section they belong. Usually you write them before a new [section] start. This however makes them belong to the previous section, which ends when the new section starts.

In short: it's not that easy as it sounds to manage ini files and even more problematic to change FinalSun for which we don't have the source code.
